I'm intrigued by the definition - I use it in conversation (being a bit of an odd chap sometimes), and always thought it literally meant "mode of operation" or "method of operation" |

Technically speaking that's what it does mean, but AFAIK it's only used in the context of crime; cf. the quotation Les provided. |

It does mean �method of operation�. It�s a Latin phrase, cops use it. You often hear is as �what is the suspect�s M.O?� I always thought a Freudian slip referred to something sexual. I guess my mind is in the gutter. I remember a lady that registered for a massage license said her name was Yong Tang. Couldn�t help but to think that was a Freudian slip. It wasn�t, I guess I�m just a pervert. |
