ok this is my first attempt, its not spectacular, but I'm learning what works and what doesn't. Its still not over so if anyone's got some suggestions I'd be more than happy to entertain them. He's pretty much locked into the "where the MTCN" and I can't seem to get him out of it at the moment...so here we go.

I found his ad on cars.com. I immediately reported the ad as fraud to cars.com and it was promptly removed.

the VIN comes from a car that was sold several years ago, and if you google it you will come up with a LOT Supra's for sale in the $7000 price range, and posts to Supra message boards asking if someone can look up the carfax report for that VIN. I've no idea what EPA DOT standards are. I DO get a bit of a sob story.

I know this is awkward, and I hope you're not offended, but I just purchased a carfax lookup, and the VIN you have listed did not come up! Carfax said that the vin was invalid. I hope this is a mistake because I really like the car, and the deal sounds great. Also, because its such a small amount I should be able to perform the whole transaction with cash I have on hand, and will not have to nofity my wife. You see, we're going through a divorce, but as the divorce is not yet final, she's still entitled to half of everything, so if I can do this as a cash transaction and not go through my bank, or leave any paper trail, I will be able to keep the car after the divorce and not have to pay HER for my car.

I am a little confused about the payment terms. Since the money will be held by a 3rd party, why are you only asking for $2000? Wouldn't it make more sense for me to just send them the entire amount since it won't be released until after I'm happy with the car?

please let me know what's happening with the VIN. I'm about to leave the office, but I can try to look it up tomorrow. Also if YOU have a carfax report already, if you email it to me, I could just look at it, and not have to bother paying carfax.

that's a great report! I must have transposed some number in the VIN. I'm glad you were able to pull up the report. Looks like you've had it for sale for almost 10 months! is it that hard to sell? Also, it says the car is registered in New Jersey, do you know if its possible to get California SMOG certification before I pick up the car? Otherwise the state will charge me $300 for importing a car that's not up to California standards?

So, how does this money thing work? I put $2000 in a fair-trade account? I've never used the service before so you'll have to forgive my ignorance. you won't believe this, but I was searching used car sites last night, and I found the most amazing thing!

I found another Supra with the exact same VIN for sale, for only $6500. I know its hard to believe, but that means the two cars were made on the same day! maybe even by the same factory workers. The only difference is that this one is yellow.

I contacted the seller and he was willing to just do the transaction using a money wire service, which is so much easier for me, since I have the money in cash and don't want my wife to see the transaction.

Also, I was wondering in light of the lower price of the other car if you would consider selling it for less. I know you have a mortgage payment coming up, but fair is fair, if someone else is willing to sell a similar car for less, I feel that I should at least ask and give you the option since I did enter into negotiations with you first. (also I'd much rather have a black car than a yellow one).

Can you tell me if it has a Greek license plate? You never replied to me about producing some documentation for the car before I send money. Besides, if we DO decide to just to this as a wire transfer I'll have to trust you not to run off with my money as much as you have to trust me to not run off with your car, so I think that asking for a some proof is not inappropriate.

THAT is a tasty looking car. It looks almost like another one I saw a while ago on a web site. It even looks like it has similar modifications! Can you tell me about them? It looks like the intake and turbo are not stock at least. What kind of turbos are those? they look huge. I wouldn't be surprised if that car made 800 HP instead of 400. this payment hassle is getting a bit tiresome. I don't think I've ever done an online transaction where it was so hard to pay someone. I was just searching cars.com, and found another car that I wouldn't mind having. Its a 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer EVO. The seller is in England and wants only $7500 for the car. I thought this shipping thing was rare and expensive, but apparently its pretty common and easy to do. He's not as picky about how I pay him.

If this is any indication of what I can expect when picking up the car, then maybe I need to rethink this purchase as I have found other cars, from sellers that are easier to deal with.

I hope we can get this purchase done, but as I am starting to see, there are other really nice cars out there in the same price range, and most of them also include transportation to me.

ok I went to Western Union this morning (a different one), and did the transfer.
THe clerk told me that due to the high fraud rate in that part of the world, she recommended a Secure Transfer. It was only another $5, and it ensures that YOU will be getting the money, and that it can't be stolen. It had to be sent to a specific office (I asked you in the last email), so I had it sent to the Athens Airport. I don't know the city that well, so I figured that's the biggest and most common one. In order to retrieve the money you will need a picture ID with your name on it. There is no MTCN (apparently that's how these payments get stolen), so you will need my name and address, the amount, and of course your name and address have to match your ID.

you already have my name and address (I see you already gave it to Luftansa) and it will be under Michael Crower, and the address you provided earlier.

also the airbill says 3500 KGS!! a supra weighs 1460 kgs, what's the other 2000+ kgs? If anything else is being shipped in my name I need to know. also, there is no pickup address on the airbill...just my address. Where do I go to pick up the car?

They actually put the car in a crate, and the crate weighs almost twice as much as the car?? that doesn't seem very efficient for air freight.

the lady at the Western Union office told me that there is NO MTCN in a secure transfer. This is how the money gets stolen. The ONLY way to pick get it is to go down there with a photo ID and the information I gave you and get the money. It can't be looked up online, because then it can be stolen by ANYONE with the right information. That's why its more secure. This way, only the person that sent the money and the person getting the money know about the transfer, and you must have a photo ID to pick it up. This is a new service Western Union now offers in the US to prevent fraud and terrorist funding. It also prevents theft and scams.

Look, this is getting rediculous. I've already SENT you the money....TWICE. and here we still are talking about it. It seems to me that you really don't want to sell the car. I know you already have it crated up and ready to go, and I would hate to pull out and buy another car, but the gentleman in England with the Lancer Evo told me that Moneygram would be a problem, and he'd even knock off $150 off the price for all the money I spent hassling with you if I pull out my money and buy from him instead. The money is there. It was sent to the Western Union at Athens International Airport.

I'd rather not leave you with a crated up car at the airport with shipping already paid (I'm sure it would cost you money to get a refund) but at this point, I'm also out a bunch of money already, and still no car...only more hassles.

How much more proof is there? *I* on the other hand can't just go down to LAX and see that the car is there (so I appreciate the confirmation from Luftansa) but in this case, you don't HAVE to trust me, rather than proof of payment, you can just go get the payment and have it. To be honest though, I'm getting a bit tired of the constantly changing the terms of the agreement and wasting my time. If feels a bit dishonest. The man selling the Evo is much more straight forward and as they say in business "money talks, bullshit walks". If you keep stalling, I'm going to take my money elsewhere. I really thought this would be an easy way to hide some money from my wife, but you're really making it harder than it needs to be. I've been straight with you. We agreed on a price, I paid it - twice! and you can't even be bothered to go get the money? what's the problem here?

AHA! I think I just figured out why he can't pick up the money!!

the scam "script" is that as soon as I make the WU transfer, I get an email that the seller has died in the scammer's choice of horrible accident, and the money dissapears, as does the car and noone knows anything about it. However, I'm forcing him to to go pick up the money at the wrong time in the script, cutting off his way out. I think he's just too dumb to realize that he can just grab the money and run here, and doesn't want to go too far off-scipt. So...how to save this and get it back on track...

we'll see what happens tomorrow when I send him my VISA reciept for the cash transfer with the CC number accidentally left on...(oops, when he said receipt, I thought he meant the credit card reciept, not the WU copy.

so...how do I post the VM? I can't figure out how to attatch, do I just change the extension to "jpg" and upload it to photobucket or is there a better way?
