A friend of mine who knows I scambait was contacted by a lad on fb. She asked me if I wanted her to give him one of my email addresses so I could bait him.
I explained to her that if I did so, and he remembered where the email came from, it would be linked to her real life identity. While it is unlikely, these folks are criminals and that just isnt safe.
Besides, I simply had her give me his email and sent an ASEM. I am sure he will reply. ThatThat's all you haveto do to get a lad you find in a real life account as a pet - safely.
Just a friendly reminder & tip for newer baiters that may be tempted to "refer" a lad to their bait character in this situation. |

Good advice.
It reminded me to ask:
What is everyone's advice (other than "drop them" or "never do it") when you have been baiting someone for a while and you make the tragic mistake of replying to a long thread/bait from your real email?
Do you quickly go back to your baiting email and hope the lad doesn't notice and continue the bait?
Do you try to smooth things over and eloquently exit by sending a note from your baiter email and let them know the transaction or deal you are doing is not going to work out? Try to ease the pain for the lad?
Do you simply go radio silent?
I've only done this once and fortunately I wasn't far enough along for the lad to have suffered too much pain but I can imagine there could be some repercussions if I slipped up in the middle of an intense, long bait.
Hmmm |

@Surfowl
Carry on from your baiting email, if he queries, act astonished, worried, you think you may have been "harked", what does he suggest you do? |

How can this happen? Baiting email is in Gmail or Fastmail or some other webmail provider; I view and send it in Firefox. RL email is at another domain and I use Kmail. Even if I used Kmail for baiting (I recently helped a friend with her computer, setting up both Thunderbird and Kmail to access her Gmail account, so I know it's possible), mail sent to an address is replied to from that address, unless I change my identity. I have two Gmail accounts in the same browser, but I can't reply from one to an email sent to the other. |

It's possible to easily change identities in Thunderbird. In, fact, it's one of the many reasons I use it. I can take an email directly from a catcher and change who it is "from" right in the email.
The only thing in Thunderbird are baiting accounts. Nothing personal so there is never a mistake.
I'm curious how you might reply to a long string of exchanges with a lad from a real life account if all other exchanges were in a baiting account. |

Sorry Irish, but I disagree. The safest (and in my opinion, only) thing to do is drop the bait. If the lad gets pissed off and suddenly remembers the other "identity" that wrote to him, then who knows what he could find out from the email address (FB profiles, LinkedIn, etc - of not just the baiter, but friends, colleagues and family as well).
In fact, I would go so far as to consider the baiting email account totally compromised and stop using it all together, who knows what innocent looking emails may arrive in future, that are actually from a scammer who knows the RL identity. |

I use Macmail and have 12 email accounts. My baiting email is Gmail. On rare occasions I click the lads name to send a new email and it defaults to my RL email. It's only happened twice and I probably should look into alternate ways to use email for lads. |

@ B8er
True, I keep thinking people are as paranoid as I am, and even my RL email isn't connected to my RL. Good advice.
The only email I have that has my RL details is a hotmail one, that is quickly becoming defunct with the changes and usless crap MS keeps loading into it. |

If you bait from gmail and use gmail in real life and are on a mobile that has both accounts stored on it. It would be easy to accidentally switch identity for the sender on a reply. |

the easiest way would be: use different devices. nearly always people will replace old devices like notebooks etc with newer ones. so the old device is fully functional but unused.
old notebook: load lubuntu onto it, and everything works
additional advantage: if the lad even consideres sending you a virus, that virus will do no harm. it can only be executed in certain conditions and even then it will be hard to do harm. |
