Hey, everyone. It's been several months since I've been on the forum. I have been baiting a scammer who targets actors - classic "I'll send you a check for your payment and you wire half of it to someone else" gig. I always give the scammer a fake address, and this one isn't smart enough to verify the address before having his mule (who is outside of LA) send the check. They are using hacked FedEx accounts of businesses around the US. I'm sure the lad bought a list of accounts from a phisher, or is perhaps doing the phishing himself (although he doesn't seem bright enough to pull that off).

He has been so kind to send me the tracking numbers, so I then call FedEx to find out the "sender" - that is, the business whose account is being used. I then call that business and let them know their account has been compromised and advise them to contact FedEx, and how to identify and avoid phishing scams in the future.

Question - is it ok for me to contact the businesses with the hacked accounts? They are not really ITPs - they are victims who are already "involved", so I didn't see any harm in contacting them. But, I wanted to check with the mods to see if I am missing anything, and if I should do anything different.

Some of the businesses have already been contacted by actual victims of the check scam, wondering why a law firm or a logistics company would be sending them a check for something totally unrelated. Glad to hear that people are getting wiser to these scams.

Thanks, in advance, for any feedback.

I would think informing FedEx of their customer's account being compromised should be enough. Or maybe not.
Can the moderators handle something like this like they handle bank accounts and credit cards?

Pass the tracking number to a moderator.

Definitely contact a moderator. It sounds like you are doing the right thing, but Eater has some credibility & reports funneled through here may be able to do more good. Also you may want to get involved over at scamwarners.com...
