Hey everyone,
I've been getting involved in scambaiting as a hobby recently and want to start sharing the email addresses and info I've discovered with you all:
Here's a scammer I was able to get to talk to me for 15 days straight: Removed two email addresses. -Connie
What I know about him: from Nigeria, currently going by the name Marc Harvey and says he's a business development manager with Uber. Claims he's in Scotland.

Scam: Wanted me to open up an online bank account and give him full access to it, later wanted me to wire transfer money to someone and promised he'd "pay me back later" (probably would have sent me a fake check.

Here's a list of Google hangout scammers I've come accross. You can pretty much message these folks from Google hangouts at anytime and waste their time going through one of their fake interviews. After the interview, they'll ask you for your address and info for them to send you a fake check, or they'll try to get you to buy a gift card and send them a picture of the code. At that point you can tell them you know it's a scam or say you've changed your mind and aren't interested anymore:

NOTICE: Whatever you do, DON'T EVER GIVE THEM ANY OF YOUR PERSONAL INFO OR anybody else's actual address and personal info (be careful when making up fake info that might coincide with somebody else's real identity). Also, don't ever attempt cashing the fraudulent checks! Your bank will charge you for the money and you can get in a lot of legal trouble.

Has anybody else ever talked to any of these scammers? What have you found out about them? What are some tactics you've used to keep the conversation going without giving them any of the information they want? I'm new to this, so I'd love all of your tips! I want to start posting new emails I find weekly.

Welcome to Eater. Please do not get offended but I pulled out the email addresses. I am sure that they are scammers but we have our guidelines.

Hmm.. that's unfortunate. I don't understand though, why is it okay to post emails in the "surplus" forum but not here?

I guess I'll just delete my post then because there's nothing useful in it without the email addresses.. I posted them with the hopes that people would Google it and find them and not fall for their scams.

If you'd like people to find the scams and not fall for them, post them (the complete email, not just the address) in Scamwarners.

My best guess would be because you're just posting a bunch of e-mails with no proof they are scamming.

In Surplus you post the e-mail along with the message.

VP posted a great suggestion about posting stuff on ScamWarners, I know when I Google parts of a scam message they are frequently showing up in the Google search results.

Why is this in place? So when an ex, a boss, the guy that upset me on Facebook, or whomever, pisses me off, I can't come here out of revenge and just offer up their email address. Would you want just anybody to be able to come here and post your email address and claim you are a scammer, without proof?

If I was intent on doing that- what would prevent me (apart from internal moral compass) from posting the email address along with an unrelated 419 format?

Well, for one, it's a bit more effort, and most people who want to set up their ex's. or lads posting up victims as scammers, don't go to the bother. Usually it would be a quick signup and initial post along the lines of "MyEvilEx@whatever. took $50 and..." Joining eater, becoming a trusted member, posting creative baits, and then posting up one bogus one to set up your ex, is a pretty long con with little pay off. Even joining and manfuacturing a fake bait/scam email just to make your eater post look "legit" requires more effort and site research than someone new to the site and intent on revenge is likely to do. Plus you'd be found out pretty quickly when some of us tried to bait your "lad".

As for why posting up email addresses without background/evidence of scam is against eater policy, Bware419ers, Connie, etc covered that nicely.

Sandythescamslayer I think you were posting for the right reasons (wanting to expose scammers), and I realize you may not have emails with scammers who communicate primarily via chat. But without the traditional email correspondence, you can still post the scammer to ScamWarners and the surplus section here. Simply post any images of themselves they sent to you (be sure to watermark it as fake, as they are usually using stolen photos of innocent people), the first few lines of their chat (where they're telling you they're US Army stationed in wherever, a sweet young girl with a large inheritance, etc.), their email, and how you found them (for example a link to their dating site profile, facebook, etc.).

Thank you for not deleting your initial post. When users do that, it disrupts the entire thread as no one knows what everyone down the line was replying to. Your post is not wasted as it resulted in a good discussion. Also, you gave some very good advice in it (don't use any of your own info, don't accept checks, etc.) It sounds like you're getting good results scambaiting these lads. Please stick around here, post up your baits if you like, and enjoy.

Thanks for the responses, I'll take some time to post emails WITH MESSAGES in that other thread. It is all mostly text or google hangouts, but I can screenshot some of the initial conversations.

I have tons of them.

If you take screenshots of text, don't post it as screenshots, post it as text. Victims may be searching for text in the messages, and search engines don't know to try to turn the images into text.

I got the ultimate screenshot from my sister the other day- she actually took a photo of the screen of her computer on her phone with the email on it...

A pretty nasty type too, a blackmailer (I hacked your computer and turned on the camera and took video of you 'pleasuring' yourself, pay up in bitcoin or I will post it online and email to all your work colleges) that was sent to her work email account!

Sad

(um neither her work or home computers actually even have a webcam LOL so it falls down at the post)

but still a nasty email to get

(It also has another of my pet peeves, employers that use your first and last name at company.com- I was less than impressed to find that her company also puts an online blog with their photos and names on it- makes stalking far too easy- especially since she works at a lawyers and they tend to have a lot of not very nice people that get annoyed with them)
