Benin lad just asked me to pay $55. That is an astonishingly small amount. Have any of you seen anything smaller than that?

I've seen $20, but that was probably some sort of smaller fee compared to whatever the lad was trying for. I didn't bother responding to them; I don't want to waste my time with unambitious lads.

My favorite is $XX or "whatever your have". Time to count pennies.

The bottom line is that some lads will take whatever they can get, even should it be your last penny.

And remember that the first amount is really just to prime the pump. They're looking for a lot more as the "fees" pile up and the victim gets in deeper over their head as they go.

Oh, it definitely wouldn't be the only fee, but $55 just seems like it wouldn't be worth anyone's time once they finish bribing the police and the Western Union clerk and (if applicable) split it up between the different gang members.

If someone sends any money, chances are highly greater that they will send money again. So sometimes lads will ask for very small amounts (as small as $5) just to sort of "pre-screen" victims and weed out the vast majority of people who will never pay.

As for your lad, however, $55 isn't an unusual first amount to send. As loualsindor said, they're priming the pump. Get you to buy into the scheme. Then you (or rather a real victim) will be always chasing back that first investment, and putting more and more money in. As he said, the amounts get higher as the scam goes on.

In a case like that, is it exceedingly difficult to bait the lad for more than a few weeks?

My character speaks very poor English, so that can prolong it a bit.

No. You can still string them along making it seem like you really want to pay but things keep happening. (Evil Western Union employees, not understanding how to do transfers, needing more information, etc.).

I can always go with the ol' "I paid you, you should have your money in about a week" (sent a WU money order) modality. Doubly fun when I don't speak much English and neither does the (Benin) lad

Fear not, the dollar amount is secondary to having a victim. I strung a lad along for over year for a hundred bucks. If they think there's a chance they'll get paid they'll usually stay the course.

I was told once by somebody in the know that to make any first payment, no matter how small, is regarded by the lads as 'making a commitment', which will naturally lead to larger and larger payments.

Ive had a few of particularly lazy lads who sent out their template completely unfilled so no name, missing text and no dollars at all in the fee amount
Dunno if they mistakenly sent out their template or just didnt known it wasnt complete, was amusing tho
I think I had the record for most amount asked for tho
