So I engaged for the first time and I'm not sure I got what I expected. I don't mind giving some details here, but it is a public forum so I don't want to blow it straight away.
The jist of it was a large sum owned by someone who is dying and offered a share to move it. When I agreed to help the next response was to contact a bank at the phone/email provided and provide account details. I was expecting him to build some trust first.

Fairly typical - straight for the money

Throw him off script - ask him about his family, his dreams in life, what he had for breakfast - you get the idea ......

This early in a bait you should just focus on the delay. Make him invest time and effort in you, that way he feels like he deserves your money. This will allay any troubles that might come in the future.

Getting a Lad's interest can be tricky. Take it slowly and carefully. If you have a persona in play, use its quirks to win his attention. He's your new-found best buddy.

So I've asked a few family questions. I didn't really expect to get answers, but I did. Every question answered. Even got the photos I asked for. And something else... The poor English is fake. There's just enough tiny details about the grammar and punctuation to tell me this lad can write properly.

The exchanges are about one per day each way, and he's pushing for account details to lodge the millions. I have to admit I don't get the scam yet. Even with real bank details the bank would likely intercept any withdrawl. Unless maybe it's more local than expected.

Asking for your bank details is on the Lad's checklist, I guess. Once he has those details, he can move to the next stage; he can't demand a payment for moving the funds otherwise.

Yes. If your character is in the USA, you'll need a SWIFT code (four letters to name the bank, then US, then two more alphanumerics, then optionally three more alphanumerics), a routing number (nine digits), and an account number (up to seventeen digits, but usually no more than twelve with the first few being 0). If your character is somewhere else, the routing number (or whatever they call it) and account number have different formats, but the SWIFT code format is the same except for the country code. Make something up and check that the SWIFT code and routing number don't match any real bank.

That said, R&A's bank account's swift code has the country code ME, and no lad has called me on it, though one threw an error after his mule apparently went to a bank with it.

I do all the time. Just like I make up the name of the bank. State Bank of Hooterville, IndustRail Transport Credit Union, and Commerce bank of Beverly Hills.

Two big reasons for asking you to give your bank account details:
- it makes the deal seem "real" and gets you thinking about money coming into your account
- it tests whether you are willing to follow instructions or whether you are just wasting time. Building trust as you put it.

Eventually the "bank" scam character will ask you to pay a fee of some kind to release the funds into your account. How long that takes, depends whether you get him off script.

...and even then you may 'accidentally' supply the 'wrong' bank account number...more than once...
