Car scammers are back again

I've been away from baiting for a couple of years for RL reasons but just before I left Eater's attack on the Romanian car scammers brought scores of piggies and saw many websites deaded.

Sadly it seems that the scammers never went away. BBC Northern Ireland is reporting that since March this year four people have been defrauded of some £18,000 between them in the Swedish car buying scam.

Bill Malloy from the Northern Ireland Trading Standards Service said all the cases were identical. "The scammer says they have worked in IKEA in Belfast or Dublin for seven years and they have now returned to Sweden and the car that they have is right-hand drive and is no use in Sweden. So they're prepared to sell the car at a good price and they will arrange transport of the car back to Ireland, north or south.

In each of the Northern Ireland cases, the victims were sent a link that opened up a specially created website for the fake logistics company.

On which platform are these car scammers operating? Autotrader? Craigslist? Something else? I am the one who battled with the Eastern European car scammers on Autotrader UK a few years ago. If they are back, I am happy to go back into battle. The key back then was working in conjunction with AT's security group, teaching them the algorithm for quickly identifying the fake car ads, and also working with the car dealers whose Autotrader accounts had been hacked.

I am interested in learning more about the Swedish scam. I may be able to help.

I didn't post much from the war against the car scammers on Autotrader UK. It started out as a bait but then quickly turned into an offensive mission in conjunction with AT's security group and Scotland Yard to shut them down. It wasn't something that could easily be posted, as it no longer involved actual baiting, beyond a bit of pig farming and fake site destruction.

This batch of activity seems confined to Ireland. The scammers used a Northern Ireland used car website and said they had worked in IKEA Belfast. In the Republic of Ireland they said they had worked in Iranrodd Eireann, Irish Rail. They had the usual fake logistics website where "your payment can be held securely while the car can be seen for approval". I'll post if we hear any more. Of course the price was very low and as usual greed overcomes common sense Sad
