My lad's wants me to download an app called team viewer. I assume it will give him access to my computer....of course I won't download it...Has anyone else heard of this app?

I used it for remote teaching when I worked as a costumer consultant. Basically, it lets you see his desktop, or vice cersa. You can even allow the other one to assume control over your mouse, although you can break it off when you want. In other words - do NOT accept his proposal, as it can compromise your identity. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

I'm actually using a chrome book that belonged to my late boyfriend. It has his information on it, which of course is irrelevant now. I was planning on power washing the chrome book shortly. But still not going to install that app.

In this context I agree with TheDane - the lad is looking to gain what's called 'unattended access' in Teamviewer. This would enable him to know when your machine is switched on and connected to the internet and remote control it without you having to provide the password normally required.
He would then have the same access to your entire PC contents as if he were sat in front of your desk. A message is left on screen after one of these sessions to let you know it has happened but by then the damage is done.
The chromebook may have a hidden rebuild partition that will allow you to restore it back to factory default build on bootup. I'm not a chromebook user so I can't confirm this but if you google the device manufacturer and model with 'restore factory settings' you should see if it's possible.

I agree, why potentially give the lad access to anything he can use to further his bullshit or identify you. Scrub the laptop with something like BleachBit and use it as a baiting only computer.

I'd avoid downloading anything from a lad unless you know a bit about computers.

Actually, you can't access a remote screen with TV without exchanging randomly generated session passwords, but the target could be tricked into doing that. Any case, never do as a lad asks, so make up an excuse. Tell him that you run AmigaDOS and that TV doesn't work with that.

Also, do NOT underestimate what a career criminal can do with anyone's personal info, even if they are no longer with us. Teamviewer and any other software that allows a criminal to access a computer connected to you in any way is a VERY bad idea.

If a password is given out once then the lad can set up unattended access so that he never needs a password again. That would be what the lad was aiming for almost certainly. A one off remote session wouldn't do him much good if the victim was watching.

They are trying to gain access to your computer to reset your bios password (on Windows) so they can access it and you can not. Then, you are told to pay them to restore access.

I am guessing you are talking to a tech support scammer? Their modality is outside of the scope of what we deal with here, but they're the most likely to ask you to use team viewer. If the lad was not a tech support scammer, please post, because i have not seen other types of lads using it.

TV runs as a windows service or process so it will close down when windows shuts down. TV isn't running at the post so you can't use it to view the BIOS directly. He could plant a virus with it using TV file transfer though that could run ransomware.

@Calvin: While it is true in theory that you can set up remote access, the lad would not be able to do so covertly and without the high possibility of the target seing it while it was happening, and getting suspicious. So he would be risking his future dollar.

In any case, TV should be avoided in what we do. Period.
