Do you think many scammers know about and visit this website for hints on what we are up to?

We get the occasional suicide lad or one who googles. But generally, scammers don't really get what we do here. Or why.

^^ To be honest, Capone, I really don't know why that is. I get it that lads don't understand the concept of putting time and energy into an altruistic venture, but most certainly there are young Nigerians who do find us here, many of whom know of college colleagues, etc, who are scammers. They surely communicate with one another?

The best scams of all are those carried out by the most highly intelligent, who do know about Eater and how to present themselves as something different to a scammer, but, nevertheless, as a person who could do with some help, as conditions in Nigeria are so appalling.

Here's another thing: it is often said lads don't Google much. But, where else, for the main part, do they get all those pics for 'convincers' and fb / dating site profiles, etc? I would hazard a guess that many of the most acute lads know everything about Google and use it extensively. To believe anything else would be to deny the obvious. Of course, not all the lads are that acute, but I always work on the premises that they are. If I can do it , they can do it and maybe even more.

I've had lads google my character's name (and look for their house on Street View) - which is why I like to keep their 'real names' off the googleable forums here.

I don't think it's very likely they usually google their own fake names or sections from their own emails. Nonetheless, I have had several lads who have LINKED me to Eater, to prove to me that 'the other lawyer' or someone is a scammer (maybe they think it is a scam warning site?), and I've even discussed Eater with one lad after he did find emails from my character here. He believed that this is a 'Hacker's Site', where hackers show off the emails they have found in hacked email accounts. Naturally, my character was totally shocked about being hacked, and changed her email address immediately, and asked for lots of advice about avoiding being hacked again.

but there are a few things that lads can easily find here.

for example, a few years back, the parcel service was burned because it was named as a baiting modality. and TM has his own experience with his main bait characters, which should not be named here.

and if I recall correctly, the bush-YMCA was discussed on nairaland, because it has gone "too far" (it's a funny bait, and was very stressfull for the lad, http://www.nairaland.com/58895/scam-bait-gone-too-far ).

so, some lads are aware of scambaiting communities, but usually they don't understand the purpose of baiting, as it does not create income).

Actually, Robert H, I think some of them do know, whether it generates income, or not. After all, one needs to bear in mind that they know all to well how to scam people who are following altruistic instincts when they agree to send money to needy orphans, with no thought of a return on their money.

Perhap, however, they have no idea of the lengths we will go to in order to contend with them, driven only by principle. That much I concede.

Scamming is a rather cut-throat business and lads rip each other off all the time. They're not likely to "warn" another lad if they think he's been made a fool of or someone is wasting their time.

I hear you, Padme. But whilst individual scammers may, indeed, guard jealously maga contacts and personal scamming techniques, just to play Devil's Advocate, don't they often work in groups and share all sorts of general information?

There are always exceptions, but generally, no, not that kind of information. If it's a well organized gang, they're most likely sharing information that is very relevant to the furtherance of a particular scam, so things like email logins to scam boxes they share, bank details of mules, formats. If two lads were working the same victim, and that victim turned out to be a scambaiter, then one lad would tell the other. But, just sharing links to eater or discussion of "time wasters"? That kind of chatter is likely relatively uncommon.

I always do my best to ensure the lad never knows he was baited, giving them no reason to google anything. When it all comes undone it's always his fault.

As tempting as it is to sign off with "thanks for all the fun, dirtbag", stealthy is better.

Lou's right, this is exactly why we don't burn lads. The fading away de-educates the lads and makes them less certain about how a victim might react.

Lads are more likely to find themselves at SW as we post their full details there, including the WU/MG payees and bank accounts they give. But even then, they really don't understand why we do what we do.

I think a lot of it is cultural ignorance. But it the end I think it is the same thing that allows 419 scams to flourish, but in reverse. All of us here have heard it said that " we scam the scammers". And we get pissed because the expression carries connotations of cashbaiting. In the end though we are doing the same thing. Using human nature. We all know that most victims of scams are not stupid no matter how they are portrayed. But at a certain point they tip and WANT to believe. Who wouldn't? I know I could use a few million. This is why hitlad scams seldom work. No one wants to believe in that.
We turn the tables. We hold out the promise of a payday. The lad WANTS to believe, so he does. Human nature. They know that "jokers"are out there, just as vics know that scammers are out there. But they chose to believe in the end because they WANT to.
