As always, there are email signatures but I won't include them. The scammer is James and Ben is me.

The bait started on October 16, 2016.

James:

of this email has been forwarded to the UNITED STATE OF AMERICA
POLICE/AUTHORITIES and will be ordered for your immediate arrest.

The need for your urgent prosecution arose from your inability to
secure the mandatory Clearance Certificate from the Economic And
Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Nigeria inspire of several
opportunities given to you by the Police Department, Home land
Security, FBI and IRS of your country.

In view of the indicting report submitted to the Police Department,
Homeland Security, IRS and FBI by the Economic and Financial Crimes

Around 12 hours later he resends the exact same email.

I think I'm going to send some emails off to Paul, and then pretend I'm not receiving his replies. Could this be my first hacking modality?

I like where you're heading.

After a couple of days not receiving Paul's messages, tell Jimmy that you've heard from Paul and all is going ahead. Give it a couple of days more, and you can bet that Jimmy will be complaining that Paul hasn't heard from you.

It's then that you mention how you've paid all the required fees to Paul's "trusty assistance"...

Who is the "trusty assistance"? There are many dollar choppers out there - the members of the Gomerbois, Mr Uzumbo, Feathers McGraw of the Snorky Gang (of Montana), my own choppers, James Boswell and Jeffrey Wilson... so many harkers and password stealers out to rob you...

I don't follow. So you're saying I should send some messages off to Paul and ignore his replies. Then I tell James that I've heard back from Paul. James complains Paul hasn't had a conversation with me. I reply that I've sent the fees to Paul's assistance.

Is that it?

That about sums it up. Basically, you're building a picture of interference by another scammer.

In the short term, act baffled if the Lad starts to complain or rant at you. As far as you're concerned, things are going normally and now the Lad is telling you otherwise.

Going with the 24 hour rule, I'm not going to contact either Paul or James until he stops sending these emals.

I may be in the minority but I'm not a big fan of the "24 hour rule". I've had a great deal of luck with a flurry of back-and-forth with a lad and then "I'll find out and get back to you tomorrow" to end it. I think it accomplishes a few things.

- He's totally engaged with me and not working on anything else, best time-waster ever.
- I build an immediate rapport/relationship/level of trust and the hook is often completely set.
- I've set an expectation for our next step and taken control of the conversation. The timing of our adventure is now mine.
- He's already conditioned to accept gaps in our conversation so I can ignore him for as long as I want (if I don't want to screw with him over the weekend I just "can't get to the bank until Monday, will contact you then"). He's anticipating my return and not likely to drift away.

Different strokes but this seems to be working for me!
