I love my long term lads (I know I am not the only one here), but the longer they go and the more ridiculous it gets, the more I wonder if they are even capable of scamming someone. I wonder if these particular lads could really fool someone if they are so dumb.

Take Shorty for example, does anyone know of any real victims of him?

I am constantly surprised at how some lads can be so terrible with baiters and so effective with others. I had one lad who I thought was horrible at his craft, however, when his information was refreshed on scamwarners and other sites, lots of victims were posting. Some of the lads that fall in with long term baits are just idiots, but others might just be creating a character to fit what they think we want, and those may have plenty of victims.

@Drusilla, IIRC, Shorty was running an AIDs scam, which made him an especially deserving lad.

Oscar's lad in Main was a romance scammer before he wanted to become a rap star.

The contrast between lad idiocy and success with victims never ceases to amaze me either.

I think two factors explain this phenomenon:

(1) Lads send millions of messages before getting a handfull of victims. There's a selection of vulnerable targets.

(2) A baiter with some experience is an expert in lads and has an incredible amount of accurate information about them. There's no point of comparison between a baiter and a potential victim.

One big thing to keep in mind: their successes are very often based on well tested and highly organised formats that guide a victim into a state where they are ready to pay out. The further they get from the tried and tested methods, the less confident they may be.

Although from their perspective it's always important to keep looking for the next big format, as times change and potential victims become more aware of the usual modalities. We do see some cases where scammers are trying to figure out a baiting method, thinking it's another format for extracting cash from victims. Sometimes I wonder how widespread it is.

finally, I agree with Padme that some scammers may be putting on a certain role to try and achieve their goals. For example where a baiter is giving a story that seems truly unbelievable - I wonder how many of these cases a lad is playing along, not necessarily believing the baiter's tall tales but still working under the assumption there is a potential paying victim there if he plays it right. Certainly not all baits are like this but I do wonder.

I've also noticed that if you just roll like an easily scammed victim and they stay on script it all seems fairly reasonable. It's when the script is far behind you that you see how sharp the lad is. It also seems that the ones you can drag into the weeds are the idiots and the ones that drop you when you try to get them off script are probably brighter bulbs.
