Hello all, I am new to scambaiting. My question is, I often receive recorded messages about my credit card or other that are clearly scams. They always asked to press a number to be connected. Is there any risk if I press the number. I have heard years ago that if you did press the number they could/would transfer your phone service or long distance service? Is this still true or can I safely press the number and have fun with them.
Thank you |

That is not the type of thing that we deal with here and it is not safe, as they have your phone number and possibly other details about you. |

I use caller ID ALWAYS. So many times I google the number later and find out it is a scam. Just don't answer. |

If you do talk to them your number gets put on a list of people that are compliant. That list is quickly shared. So you can expect to receive many, many more calls from a scammer.
If this is your real life phone number you should just ignore them.
Having said that, if you want to waste a scammer's time we can help you do that. Read the stickies to learn what we do here, and more importantly what we don't do. The most important aspect is baiting safely. We piss off criminals for fun. There is no reason to jeopardize your safety for a few laughs. Fighting the good fight starts with protecting yourself.
If you are interested in learning more and plan on staying around then I suggest signing up for a mentor.

As above, the short answer is "no, this isn't safe" Why would you want to give a scammer your real life number by calling him back? Also, the call back may be to a number that is charging you major money per minute.
Just ignore the calls or block them. If you want to mess with lads, read our stickies. We have some fun ways to do it. |
