Got home from a week of travel and my wife indicated we got several calls from someone saying they were from the IRS and we we're going to experience legal issues if we didn't resolve the matter.
I'm very familiar with the IRS scam. But this time I decided to have a little fun. Here's a 2 minute excerpt of the experience! Warning - it does contain vulgar language and will likely make you laugh very hard!

Be careful! This person knows your phone number and may likely know your address. If you get them mad, there might be retaliation.
One person who messed with an IRS scammer, very recently, got "swatted" in response. The scammer called the police and reported a hostage situation, which led to a SWAT team response:

yes, the only way to treat them is:
call the real IRS, and ask them, if there is indeed an issue open that needs to be resolved (unlikely).
and then just ignore them.
they might be baitable for someone who really knows how to stay safe and how to protect ITPs, but they are clearly not the beginner league. and as bruin pointed out, they know your real life data. |

Actually, there's no need to even call the IRS. The IRS doesn't communicate by cryptic messages left on your answering service; they communicate via letters (usually registered). If you owe the IRS back taxes, or if you are being audited, there won't be any doubt in your mind that you are communicating with the real IRS. |

^Yeah. The IRS knows as much about U.S. citizens as the Gestapo knew about German citizens during WWII. And they are about as subtle in their communications if they think you owe them money. I guess the more things change the more they really do remain the same. |
