My colleague received a letter containing 2 somewhat official-looking scratchies from a fake travel company - one of them (of course) winning a second prize of US$165000
Contact details are on the cards - there are phone numbers, a website (most likely fake, which I will hopefully report) and an email address.
Anyone interested in baiting these guys? Any reasons I should not?
If so, shall I post the details publicly or just pop them in surplus? |

There's a big list of scanned examples of this postal scam at the NZ Department of Internal Affairs "postal scam" website
"Malaysian Travel Scratchie Scam"
Some of the examples also include copies of follow-up communications where it is clear that this is run just like other advanced fee lottery scams: that is, victims are required to pay some kind of processing fee to release their "winnings" PDF example
It seems like these would be baitable like other lottery scams. One concern I have not yet figured out: whether the "award code" that appears on the scratch cards is unique (and thus potentially identifies a target victim) or whether they print all their scratch cards the same in a given run. |

Yeah from what I've read it's the same as those. Also from Malaysia. Apparently you are requested to pay a transfer fee or some sort of tax payment.
I have sent a reply from my baiter account but have not had a reply yet. I am aware of the risk of linking a unique code back to a real person.
Not sure how old the letter was. My colleague has been overseas for a month so it could be a while. I've noticed the website is down - suspended by the hosting provider - so if I don't hear back it's likely this one is busted already.
I'll keep you posted if there are any updates and it's still baitable, and will contact a mod if I feel out of my depth. |

Tbh. Scratch tickets with unique numbers, and a database with addresses and matching ticket #.
That is a lot of work (and money) for a lad just to trace the occasional fraudster. |
