A newbie to scam baiting - any advice?

Good morning!

I received a great e-mail this morning from an African gentleman who has informed me that a dear relative has passed away, and I have $8m awaiting me. I want to have some fun, so I've set up a new e-mail account and would like to respond to the mail. Having never done this before, I would appreciate any tips to maximise my chances of wasting this gentleman's time as much as possible! Where do I start?

My Dear Mr. Martins,

Thank you for taking the time to contact me. I am very sad to hear that a distant relative has passed away in such a terrible way. Although I was not aware of this, I know that my family is spread far and wide globally and it is not a surprise that I should have an extended family member who has left such a large fortune. My family, historically, have always been entrepreneurs with a keen knowledge of how to make money.

Was it perhaps my Great Uncle David who has passed? We know that he went to Africa a number of years ago to pursue his love of big game hunting so this would not surprise me. I do not believe that he had any children so I would be entitled to his inheritance.

I can’t even begin to tell you how much this money will mean to me. While my family is quite well off financially, it's always nice to have the long-term security of additional funds, so that we may consider purchasing an even bigger house, or buying the children another pony.

Please would you let me know how I proceed in claiming the inheritance?

I look forward to hearing from you. I am very excited about this news, although sorry to learn of the death of my Uncle. He was a stranger to me, but I have often heard fascinating stories about him, such as his dear love of the African people, and how he lived as a native among a distant tribe who had plates in their bottom lip, liked cannibalism, and wore lots of gold circles as necklaces that elongated their throats similar to giraffes.

Hi "Laura", welcome to Eater.

Your first mail is too long for a first response, the lad won't bother reading it, he'll just send the next mail in his script (some do this even if the response you send is "F*** Off". Save the questions and character details for later in the bait when he is more invested in you.

A good place to start (in addition to the stickies) is this tutorial on straight baiting.

First, are you baiting safely? Your real name, your username on Eater, and your baiting character's name should all have nothing to do with each other. Your baiting character should be located at a plausible, but nonexistent, address. You should not commingle baiting characters' email with anything else (including email of other baiting characters who don't know the first baiting character).

A good inheritance bait is always fun. I see you set up another email account : good start. You can expect your lad to use script for the first few replies-no worries, play along and you can introduce chaos, weirdness and generally ruin the scammer's day!

they are nice.

how about letting HIM teach you scambaiting.

just ask him everything you want to know, how he plans to proceed and so on. play a wealthy and yet simple minded person. and every time he wants you to go to western union, screw it up (if your character is female, buy new handbags with the money, if your character is male, buy a new expensive phone. they love seeing you wasting "their" money). and be cautious, all institutions which deal with money are highly combistible and often targets of robberies... Wink

and lads love to talk on the phone, so find either a nice excuse or get a cheap burner phone, or use skype.

if he identifies you as a joker, never mind. just set up a new mail address and repeat (by now you know his script).

1) Bait safe. Others have explained this.
2) Never drop your cover. If you wish to stop then just stop, no explanations! Never let them know that you suspect anything.
3) Never explain your real reasons! If they don't know about scambaiters then your shouldn't teach them.
4) Do not educate them! Do not point out their mistakes or correct their language.
5) Never give them anything they can use! Passports, IDs ect. are just the stuff they can and will use. Even if you photoshopped your posterior to the passport photo there is a chance that someone doesn't get the joke (their victims are known to be gullible you know!)! Lad would just think you are joking and dump you.

And ALWAYS remember: LAD'S LIE! They want your money and therefore only truth that comes out of their mouth is because it is convenient!

Ask about tax consequences.

Ask if it is legal. Can you get an opinion from a lawyer confirming that he has investigated and this whole thing is legal?

Ask if he can redo the transaction in Euros, or Pesetas, or Canadian Loonies, or whatever. (argue about exchange rates!!)

Ask if he has an anti-terrorism clearance certificate.

I suggest not to ask them all at once, it's easier to try to compel him to reply if you've asked one and only one question in the previous message.

At least in my experience, if you ask multiple questions he's likely to ignore them all!

Ask a single question a day- if that

and be dumb- every time he replies- ask for a better/more complete answer

and IF he stuffs something up- DONT correct him!!!

just store it away ( a postit note on your monitor even lol)

and when it goes wrong (it ALWAYS goes wrong for some reason...) then its his fault because- he stuffed it up!!!

oh yes, and then raise the speed of the answers. most lads use nowadays mobile phones for scamming, making it hard to reply with pre-written scripts.

especially if a baiter is from america (or australia), it can be used as an advantage. make him work at odd hours Twisted Evil

they especially love calls at 3 am lagos time.

lads have already requested something like that, after a baiter told them about a dead relative.

the lad demanded a pic of the open coffin, just to be sure about it.
