Hello ladies and gents,
My first post on this site after much amusing reading.
I have decided that I would like to partake in some scam baiting. I have dealt with a scammed before on ebay when trying to sell a car, the usual "I'll pay too much then you forward my agent the fee" trick.
I cottoned on straight away and so spent a couple of days having a bit of fun with him getting him to agree to do weird things in the car for me "so I knew it was going to a good home", then called him out.
I received a load of standard mugu abuse, gave back far better than I got, then got a "I know where you live......." threat, to which I replied that he clearly didn't, but if he thought he was clever and tough enough, to come where he thought I lived, as I would be waiting to have some fun with him. Never heard from him again.
That was back when I was a relatively young pup, now I'm a little older, a little wiser and a lot more creatively minded to have a crack at some real, long term fishing trips.
So off I go to set up a random email account.
Here fishy fishy......... |

Did you use your real email address to bait those scammers? Create a fake email address, read the stickies, grab a mentor, bait safe and you should do fine, welcome to Eater |

well yes, only because i was legitimately selling the car, and i had never heard of the concept of baiting, so just thought i would give the lad a bit of shit for being so cheeky as to presume i would fall for his ruse.
but fear not, i will create fake, disposable email accounts for this hobby. |

Great, have you got a mentor yet? They're an invaluable resource, the link is underneath the Scambaiting help forum hyperlink, they'll have more advice on getting started in baiting. |

Welcome to Eater. Have a more thorough read and see what you think. If you think you want to stick around, feel free to grab a risky free mentor.
One thing they will tell you is we don't educate lads. We don't "call. them out." Why make them any better at what they do? Let them make their mistakes, and even more, so the next person they deal with will catch on, as you did! |

i dont yet have a mentor.
i want to see what im capable of achieving by myself initially, and if i feel im not getting anywhere then ill go down the mentor route.
dont get me wrong, im not some arrogant fool who thinks because i have read a few long baits im now an expert, its more of a self achievement thing for me. if i need help be sure ill ask for it, but i want to try and develop my own style first. i already have a couple of ideas bouncing around in my head for any baits that start expanding beyond a month. |

I agree. For you to experiment on Lads trying to learn what's right and wrong by yourself can only leave an opening to hurt victims rather than help them. A Mentor can help you understand the rights and wrongs about baiting and why they are important. |

fake email created.
using a character from my favourite ever tv show, which leaves many opportunities for other characters to be introduced. plus as i know this tv show extremely well, i can remember all the characters, plot points etc to drag out the bait without making silly errors. |

If you already have a mentor now make sure you check in regularly with updates of your baits and if you need advice. |

been casting a few lines out, but so far 3 of the random 'women' saying 'hi/hello there' etc the emails are dead
but ive sent a succesfull reply to a 'job offer' under the guise of being a struggling writer between novels looking for work. |

Wise move, thinks I. While many baiters manage just fine without doing that, I am not among them -- particularly if I'm playing with multiple baits.
I have a folder for each of my characters. Within the character's folder, I dedicate a separate document to each bait and name them thusly:
CHARACTER NAME – BAIT – CC – Laddy Name – 03-28-15 ("CC" denotes the type of bait, Credit Card in this case.)
I tag the top of the doc with the same name, so I can have multiple pages open at the same time and tell the difference at a quick glance. I include the email addy that I'm using,
corresponding Forum thread URL if applicable and specs about that character at the top of the doc, too -- (all fake, of course) Name, family members
(or I make those up down the line), address, place of business, name of bank with address and account numbers, occupation, etc. Having
that info about your character already established can save you tons of time when you begin baiting with him/her.
I copy/paste email communications as I receive or send them into the corresponding bait document, too -- chronologically. That way I have a running log -- a blow-by-blow description, if you will.
I find it so much easier than opening one email at a time, digging through tons of old emails to review what's going on -- particularly if it's a bait that is
resurrecting itself (yes, that's a frequent occurrence).
This site is an immense help to me for creating new characters:
Fake Name & Identity Generator
http://www.fakenamegenerator.com/gen-male-us-us.php
I don't really know how other baiters work their email addresses, but I create a separate email for each of my characters. Otherwise, I would never be able to keep them separate,
and I just know I would be running the risk of confusing characters and baits if I worked more than one character out of the same email account at the same time! |
