I think we've all seen the lazy-lad shift to adding the fee demand in the opening script. I looked through my catcher over the last few weeks and out of 100 spams there were 3 that didn't have an amount and a person to sound it to via western union.

It's stunning that, given the thousands and thousands of these leeches, the strategies can stay so aligned. Are they just spamming each other and stealing scripts?

Lads will sometimes share scripts and they also get spam scripts like everyone else. If they see one they like they won't hesitate to re-use it.

I got a couple in my catcher but I couldn't even be arsed trying to bait them as I presumed they would just be extremely lazy and would never come off their script.

Mostly lucky, really. In a couple of cases they were just idiots and I never let them go. We'd have some sort of disaster that made the deal fall apart and we'd have to start up again (while I wasted time having internet issues and telling them endless stories about my life). Also, a little dementia can go along way. The rest I passed from one character to another to another and they kept chasing the money that was juuuuust out of reach. Siblings, attorneys, the hospice nurse, everyone wanting a piece of the millions...throw in a chop or two and it can roll along quite nicely. I've had lots that ran for many months, these were just the epics.

If you pick an area of baiting that you focus the majority of your efforts on, you refine your game until you get it.

And I'm patient.

it may be just a current trend or it could be that the business model of 419 is itself evolving. While many lads consider themselves masters of the craft and put all their effort into wringing one "client" dry over months or years, others may find a more modest, frequent and reliable payoff blasting thousands of short-con formats for a few dollars a time. This would tie in with the sort of mass phishing we often see from eastern European/former Soviet states, who as we know are all about business and wouldn't employ any strategy that didn't pay off reliably.

Yes, absolutely! bulk-bait them in batches, cycle them through regularly, match pace with them and you should run up a good few pigglies in no time.
