Hi all,
I've joined this forum 10+ years back during my final years of high school, and have been actively baiting for quite a few years with some success.
Fast forward to 2014, I've joined a multinational organization linked to the developing aid sector, and am now working primarily in sub-Saharan Africa. Few weeks ago I moved to Lagos, Nigeria and would (if work permits) offer myself to be your eyes & ears on the ground if needed.
Let me know if there's anything I could help you with!
Cheers,
Coke |

I understand you are not a complete newbie to this, far from it, but what you are suggesting still sounds fairly dangerous. I'm not sure if we endorse this kind of activity, but it of course also depends on what exactly you are offering: local knowledge such as places etc., sure, but an actual observing of a lad or something similar is something I wouldn't feel comfortable suggesting. |

^ Duckling is correct, as usual. Lagos could be a mighty unfriendly place for an outsider if it all goes bad. I would not feel happy asking you to tail a lad out there so in all good conscience this isn't an offer we can accept. With that said there is a lot we can learn from you in terms of how the land lies, what is available, political and social moods, rumours on the ground and so much more. This sort of information is immensely valuable in setting the scene or convincing a lad that a baiter is on the ground and we would be very grateful if you'd share that. Thanks in advance |

One thing that would be tremendously helpful would be identifying a webcam in a public place in Lagos that may be accessed via the internet. If you source one, you'll have friends for life here! |

These two have made valid points. Baiting safely is key. However, information is power and NG has provided some areas where we need to know more.
Can you settle a debate? Are cybercafes still popular there? |

I think i might be reiterating more for the sake of anyone in this community who might be tempted to ask you to observe a lad. So, I'm adding to the chorus, as this truly cannot be over-emphasized:
As Monsignor said, knowledge of webcams will be welcomed with applause and perhaps some happy dancing, as we love to see lads frustrated, even if they are not traveling across orders to feel that way. Also knowing local current events, and even knowing what are the "in" places culturally (popular nightclubs for instance) will all be very helpful; however, by no means should you risk even casual contact with scammers in Lagos (or anywhere). Although most scammers have little or no knowledge of baiting (or gmail jokers as some might call us), there are some who would gladly perform violence on you using methods that are literally too graphic and cruel to detail in this forum.
Welcome. We are glad to have you.
Have fun, bait well and bait safely. |

Right now, the information I'd welcome the most is:
1. Are cafes still a popular way of surfing the internet? If so, how much is an hour? And how much is to get internet in your home?
2. What are the "hip" areas of Lagos? Any names of restaurants, clubs, shopping centres? And how much is a beer/meal over there?
3. What are the rough no-go areas?
Thanks a million! |

one other thing that could be extremely helpful: access to simcards from west africa (nigeria and surrounding countries).
the idea is: buy simcards and offer them here. set up call forwarding to the baiters phone (there are some quite cheap plans available). since skype is capable of calling with a foreign phone number, this would lead to real 2-way phone connection.
the simcards doesn't need to get moved to the baiter, it doesn't even need to be in a phone, once the call forwarding is installed.
one other thing that might be helpful: you might learn about the really nasty places in lagos (gang territories, high criminality areas and so on). this way a baiter could set up a meeting in such an area and then play being obducted |

A decent map of the city would also come in handy, I think. |

Hi all,
Thanks for the replies and your concerns, I appreciate it.
And as some of you pointed out, following a lad into his hideout is definitely not on my bucket list, I was rather thinking of providing information on the ground, details about certain areas, local practices and other such things; I can also suggest places for "meetups" and other such things.
Furthermore, I am directly coordinating a group of 60 local workers all over Lagos state, which might enable me to get some detailed insights whenever necessary.
Here are some answer to questions that have come up so far:
1. Are cafes still a popular way of surfing the internet? If so, how much is an hour? And how much is to get internet in your home?
- Yes they are definitely still around, although becoming less popular as cheap [yet surprisingly good] Chinese made smartphones (Tecno Mobile, most notably) are rising in popularity.
The price range for the internet cafes varies highly depending on the location, anything between 50 and 250 Naira is reasonable ($ 0.30 - 1.35).
Internet at home starts from N500 ($2.70) for a 1GB pack, so it's becoming really cheap. You can find more information about the available plans here (one of the largest providers): http://www.swiftng.com/Products/Individuallanding (I'm personally using the SWIFT Premium package in the business section).
2. What are the "hip" areas of Lagos? Any names of restaurants, clubs, shopping centres? And how much is a beer/meal over there?
- The hippest place in Lagos is Victoria Island, followed by Lagos island (mainly the North-Eastern part known as Ikoyi) and Ikeja on the mainland (next to the airport if you look it up on google maps). Lekki, a long strip of land south of Victoria Island directly at the shore is becoming a popular residential area especially for oil workers, so some clubs and restaurants are opening up in the area as well.
Some names:
- Oriental Hotel (Victoria Island), popular bar & restaurant
- Sheraton (Ikeja), popular lounge & restaurant
- Troy (Victoria Island) extremely popular club
- The Place (Victoria Island), Bar, lounge & club, especially popular with the youths of Lagos
- The Lagoon restaurant (VI, High-end bar & restaurant)
- Cactus (VI, High-end bar & restaurant)
- Lafayette shopping mall (Victoria Island - How about a Porsche to go? Lagos has everything...)
- Broadway shopping center (Lagos Island)
There are a billion other places - if you need any recent events, check http://www.bellanaija.com/events/ and take one of the given locations, you can be 100% it will be a high-up posh venue.
http://www.nairaland.com/ is a great source for local gossip.
http://www.punchng.com/ - "the voice of the people" is a magazine made for the small man on the street, any areas with high crime rates are sure to pop up frequently, in case you need to schedule a meeting in the best possible neighborhood.
3. What are the rough no-go areas?
For Westerners, any places on the mainland is a potential no-go zone after sunset without a decent car with local driver. The third mainland bridge should be avoided even with a driver, carjackings are happening frequently.
Nigerians have a rather low risk of getting into trouble, but knowing that most of them will be living in the poorer neighborhoods in the north, you can try sending them across town by giving directions to meet in Eti-Osa or Tradefair. Traffic here is brutal, I'm frequently spending 3+ hours for my daily commute (one-way!!!).
Webcams: I've not discovered a public one yet, but I'll be keeping my eyes & ears open as of now!
Edit:
Public transport - that's a big mess everywhere in West Africa, you won't find any buses or stuff with fixed routes, nor is anybody issuing tickets. The whole sector is highly informal and unorganized, all players in the market are private persons who are using small transporters with a bunch of seats welded to the floor. Prices are usually around N20-50 depending on the distance. Haven't used a taxi yet as I have my own car with driver, but the price range varies highly, usually between N800-3000. |

Solid information Coke! Thanks.
Nairaland and punchNG are excellent background reading, I'd recommend these for any new guys wanting to get a feel for the place - Nairaland in particular can be very enlightening. |

Yes, Fantastic info!
A name of a club or hotel in the absolute worst traffic location in the city would be great. I'm sure we all have loads of Lagos lads that won't safari, but could probably be convinced to meet at a certain spot in the city. A few fruitless hours in traffic is still satisfying lad pain. |

Great information coke1984! Thank you so much for writing all that up for us!
It must be exciting traveling there! I have always wanted to go to Africa, and it's definitely in the plans for the future. It's probably the most beautiful continent on the planet, with it's wildlife, customs & culture and sunsets. Every person I have spoken with who has gone there says it's a must see and can't wait to return! |
