Well, he got through surgery with flying colors. The took out 28cm (10 inches?) of his small intestines along with his appendix as that was also inflamed. I saw the photos of his diseased bowel and my goodness, my son had to be in so much pain. Crying or Very sad

I am home now and will most likely be going back on Monday and stay in the hospital with him that night and come home Tuesday. There is a "parents" bed in his room, so I will be close by him. I only came home because his friends will be visiting him over the weekend and I am sure he and his other 16 year old friends don't want mommy hanging around listening to whatever 16 year old boys talk about. Although... mommy would like to know what they're talking about! I would tell each and every one of them to stay focused on school and away from those little hussies that are distracting them! Oh, one cute thing he said, when he was being wheeled away into surgery, he was a bit dopey and said "See you on the flip side!" Evil Lol

I have the most wonderful, funny son in the world and I am so lucky and blessed that he's mine.

I have met all his doctors and nurses, so I can rest easy knowing he's in the best care that he can be in. It's a wonderful hospital, it's just sad that there has to be a children's hospital as there were so many sick little ones there, my heart broke a thousand times and considered myself blessed that my son didn't have the problems that some of the other parents were going through. I met one mother who has a 22 month old and she was having her 14th surgery.

I want to, again, thank each and every one of you for your thoughts, prayers and well wishes. I have been all over the map emotionally this week and I am grateful for all of your support and keeping me sane. You all have reinforced my thoughts and feelings about Eater being the best community on the internet! Thank you, thank you, thank you! <hugs to all>

Sounds like things have turned out as well, or better, than you could have hoped. That's all good, and I'm glad to hear it.

He's young, he's strong, he will prevail. Bless him.

My daughter works in a NICU unit and it's so heartbreaking to see what some of these kids go through. I don't know how the doctors and nurses do it - I would be a mess...

I know how it was when mine were 16 - I don't think you want to know what they talk about! Laughing

Thank you everyone. Since they're taking him off foods of any kind for 5 days, they're putting him on TPN. They called for my consent to keep the NG tube in and to put in a PICC line.

I just hate seeing my baby go through what I have gone through all these years. I don't want him to live with this. We're still waiting to hear on the biopsy on the intestine they removed. Still keeping my fingers crossed that it's not Crohn's. There was a heck of a lot of scar tissue though. Sad

coffinsurfer- you're right, I don't think I want to know. I don't think I wanted to know when I was 16. Laughing

Glad to hear he is doing better SBAH and will keep the fingers crossed and say a quick prayer re: solid food. I'll be praying he can have a nice solid steak soon. Very Happy

^ Bacon wrapped, filet mignon.... that happens to have a topping of crawfish etouffee or perhaps with a side of surf (king crab or lobster.... pick your poison).

I'll be here with suggestions all day long. Laughing

ETA: Perhaps with a side of bacon wrapped shrimp or garlic scallop poppers. There is also bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers stuffed with cheese and crab meat.

Thank you username1939! Yes, he's doing fine. The only problem he's having is he wants the NG (nasal gastro) tube out. They want nothing in his gastro tract until after Wednesday when they'll allow him food and I must say the NG tube is no fun to have at all. They put the PICC line in and he's being nourished with TPN. They will take that out as soon as he's able to handle solid foods. He just wants to go home, and I don't blame him.

His friends were all there over the weekend. I am probably going back down tonight as his friends will be busy with school, so it's "okay" for mom to come and visit and not cramp his style. Laughing

He's resting and watching his movies and being an ornery 16 year old, bossing the nurses around.

I do have to say, the food posted in this thread sounds absolutely yummy. We'll have to pass on the spicy for now, but the lobster sure does sound good! Along with a porterhouse, of course. Wink

SBAH, I've only just seen this thread so belatedly want to wish your son a speedy recovery, which seems to be happening thankfully and lots of hugs for you.

I can understand what you're going through, no mother wants to see their child ill and in pain.

My thoughts are with you both.

Son will start eating solid foods on Thursday and after they find that his bowels are working okay and no complications they will send him home.

Esox Lucius- unfortunately, my son doesn't live with me. It's a long story but the gist of it is he has autism (Asperger's) and goes to a special private school for kids on the autism spectrum. It's a wonderful, yet very expensive school. I can't afford to live in the county the school is in and pay living expenses along with my own medical issues. So, he lives with my mother who lives in the county and I pay the school bills. I miss him desperately, but as a mother I have to do what is best for him and his (special) needs. It was the most difficult decision to make, but I want the best for him and this is the only way I can afford to meet his needs. I won't go into the fact that I have my own medical issues (Crohn's and Multiple Sclerosis) that cause me to be bed ridden for days if not weeks on end. There are times that I cannot physically take care of him. Mom's place isn't big enough for myself and fiancé to live there. As I said, long story so I gave the short version. It's times like these that make it very hard for me NOT to be with him daily. I just do my best.

Well in that case cook him something exotic (as mentioned above by our various gourmets here) then freeze it & next time you go down & see your Mum you can feed him an 'Eater Special' Wink

Having recently spent a short 7 day stint in Children's Hospital and spent nights on the "parent bed" I send not only good vibes to your son but to you as well. Smile
