Have a friend that appears to have just been scammed for $45,000 Not through the regular channels but via a company in China that they buy machinary off ( They have purchased 100's of thousand of dollars worth of machines from them but on the last order there were defects and they withheld the money required to bring the machines up to standard ) They were in discussions with the company to purchase more machines and it came time to make the payment. The person they deal with sent an email from the email account the company uses with a PDF invoice attached. The invoice amount was correct and they made payment to the bank account details listed, It was a polish bank with the company name listed as the account name ( This is common for Chinese companies as they like to keep there money away from China ) The money was transferred and when they sent the payment receipt the Chinese company has told them that its not there account and that there computers must have been hacked and someone has changed the bank details.

I find this hard to believe as they have used a company name on the polish account and I would think that in Europe to open a company account you must provide documents that prove you are that company.

The money was sent using western union but not the kind that's used for the lads. Money was sent to a business account at a polish bank. They have contacted western union and are awaiting reply.

Is there something else they could do to try and have the funds reversed from the account in Poland?

Account names are are not checked when the transfer is performed. If the other details are valid then the money is transferred.

Unless your friend can find the real details of the account holder and take legal action against them in Poland or take legal action against the company/person at the company in China, he's got no chance of getting his money back unfortunately.

An update on the WU side of things, which is something I've not seen from our types of scammer - it looks like WU offer a service for certain countries where you can use them to send money direct to a bank account, using your credit/debit card.

Sounds safer than a normal WU transfer or bank transfer as there is often more regulation around cancelling card payments, but I don't think it would be. You will be using your card to pay WU to provide a service to you (sending money to a bank account - which they will do as a wire transfer). If you get ripped off and then go to WU for a refund, unless they can get the money back, they're going to refuse to refund you and if you try disputing the payment with your bank, WU will provide the evidence that they provided the service that you paid for and the bank will reject the dispute.

On top of that western union use imtermediate banks to do the transfer so when you complain to them they complain to someone else who then complains to the receiving bank. Its an extra middle man in the process that's not required. Smart move is to pay the extra $100 and use your own banks transfer service

Could just be commercial spam. I think we need to dig a little deeper before we bait this. Try googling the phone and email details and running a WHOIS on the site.

The website was registered in August and at least one of their machines is also listed on other sites.

I'd say it's a scam.

ETA: Plus the free email addresses - they've got a domain, so why not use it.

It was the free email addresses that made me think it was't just spam. I'd just read about the company that got scammed from Chinese Machinary and there it was..... so did maybe jump in too soon.

Not knowing enough I thought such a company wouldn't use them.. but then I don't want to be blamed for a real company !!!

actually pretty common with chinese suppliers, fyi. The rest of it looks pretty shady.

I only know that because I almost bought material from one last year. Have a look through alibaba.com and see how real ones operate. Free web based services are commonly used. Why reinvent the wheel? Smile
