maybe (that's just a guess from what I've read here): he was a scammer all time long and he had to leave france or belgium for some reason, maybe he was a asylum seeker and was not allowed to stay in belgium any longer.

so he invented that story, that he had to go to nigeria, where he is in real. and then he started scamming her.

and now he provides her with all sorts of fake documents just to keep her afraid and paying.

That is indeed a VERY good question !!
I know he is supposed to be a French citizen (never seen his passport of course), but I don't know if he's from African or other origin. As a French citizen he is not entitled to live and stay in Belgium indefinately, so at some point he either had to apply for regularisation of his stay which is a procedure on its own for European Union citizens. But I don't know if he has done this or if he was ever planning to.

The more I look into this, the more it looks like an advance fee fraud. Maybe it hasn't started out that way (have to investigate this further) but it sure looks like it has evolved into one !

This may be elementary but if you can do remember to check the IP addresses of the emails. He may not be in Nigeria at all.

I don't think you will find anyone here who will not tell you it is a scam, because it is. And it's pretty clear that the "boyfriend" is up to his neck in it.

I know it seems like people here are jumping on your story and questioning you, but unfortunately there is a reason for it. Your friend has obviously been involved in this "relationship" for years, and as you have said, she has been sending large amounts of money. That is not a good sign.

For a lot of long-term victims, once a victim has gotten past a certain point, a scam can have a serious impact on the victim's mind. They mentally can't accept that the whole thing was a lie, that they have lost so much and judged so wrongly. So instead of walking away, the opposite happens. The victim becomes more dependent on the scam, and holds on to the belief even more strongly. The relationship (or the inheritance, or the lottery winning, etc.) essentially becomes an addiction, just like alcohol or a drug. And the victim starts to behave like a typical addict. An addicted victim will lie about the extent of his/her involvement. He/she will rewrite history or change the story to justify his/her actions, and to put a stop to anyone who might try to take away his/her drug (which in this case is the relationship.)
Numerous times we have dealt with victims who claimed to have met their scammers face-to-face (even claiming a full relationship like your friend.) Anything that threatens their "drug" supply will be met with hostility and/or deception. Later, after significant pressure from friends and family, a victim may claim to see the truth, and cut off contact with the scammer--but sadly, this is often followed by a friend or family member's discovery of a secret correspondence that has continued.

So when we hear a textbook African romance scam scenario that is most often carried on completely online ( well over 95% of the time the scammer is carrying the scam on completely over the internet, using stolen photos and fake names), the first thing we will do is question whether that meeting actually occurred.

In a very small number of cases, we have seen this scam carried out face to face. When Nigeria is involved, the scammer is almost invariably going to be a Nigerian, regardless of what he claims. The government and bank documents are going to be fake. (A simple check of the bank is to look at the email address used by the bank.)

As others have suggested, if he really is a French citizen, the embassy is the place to start. I suspect that if you contact the embassy, you will find that they cannot locate a French citizen by that name in Nigeria.

1. Why doesn't the boyfriend engage his business partners?
2. Why does the boyfriend request funds from his girlfriend- is she her business partner?
3. Why was the boyfriend jailed- if he has not been paid any contract money?
4. Why is the boyfriend engaging the girlfriend for funds only?
5. Why did he ask for funds when it’s obvious that for one to take a contract, he should have the necessary funds to do the job?
6. Why and where does a bank ask for funds prior to making a payment?
7. Why has the boyfriend spend so much time in Africa without going back home?
8. Why doesn't the girlfriend understand that the guy needs only a flight of $350 to be back in France?
9. Why can't the girlfriend stop using her heart and start using her head?
10. Why doesn't the girlfriend listen to the song "WHY" -by Jadakiss ft. Anthony Hamilton?
