You're in control of your life. You can shut the computer down, walk away and abandon a bait. I've dropped lads when they've become too needy and I romance bait frequently. If you need to take a break, the lads will be waiting.

I have never heard or read that any scammer was forced into this activity.

That HAS actually happened to me, deep in a love bait, loosing sleep over what insanity the next email would contain, how I would reply..."loosing myself" in the bait...and yet I know what I'm doing is right...knowing whatever is in that next email is completely pointless, I'm never giving up a dime and in the process someone else ISN'T getting those emails...taking the heat for the greater good.

You all are completely right, compartmentalization, "controlled psychopathy", it's something I need to learn...the technical aspects are easy...the letting it go, not so easy for me. And yet, I still feel a need to do something...

it's a good term...I like it, makes sense to me...and it is laugh worthy...because sometimes I take baiting WAY too seriously...it helps to step back and laugh at the silliness of it.

You could always try some of the Refugees. I don't consider them romance Lads. The Refugee projects I do are more geared towards getting the Banker & Lawyer info to post at the warning site anyway. (Another Baiting activity that you could try that will help cause pain to the Knuckleheads) Then I snatch two Piggy's and drop them to hopefully get them to send me their Paraguay script so I can post it too. Pretty mechanical baiting IMHO. They send a script, I send a script. Not emotional involvement at all. Occasionally I'll get a romace Lad in there but I suck at Romance Baiting and they don't usually last very long.

It's a damn shame hitlads are so rare these days. I don't think it is possible to feel bad about putting one of them thru the ringer. Very Happy

I almost exclusively bait love lads and I do so because I think that lads that prey on the emotions and vulnerabities of people looking for companionship deserve a special place in hell. For that, love SCAMS are the lowest of the low and full of manipulation and gut-wrenching sadness.

As for a love BAIT, as a baiter, I bait a love lad with no more emotion or involvement then I bait a rental scammer. Because I see the basturds as the lowest of the low, I enjoy toying with them even more. Every bit of pain I can pass their way is that much more satisfying. I know every word out of their scammy little fingers is a lie.

I disagree that love baits are dark. It's the scam that is dark. The bait is what you make it. If you can't stay emotionally distant then you could get sucked in. It's never happened to me but I don't have a problem telling some fuckwit I love him if it means he's not scamming somebody's granny.

I know that love baits aren't for everyone. Some can't do it, some won't. I do wish that more would try since we don't have nearly enough baiters in our little corner of the forum. Everyone knows their limit though and when this stops becoming a hobby and becomes stress, you know it's time to take a timeout or move to a different type of bait.

I keep my sanity by avoiding romance lads. I only a bait a few lads at a time (though some of those can get dark too), and I dedicate most of my anti-419 activity to site killing.

That allows me a level of detachment. I rarely, if ever, see the effects of my site killing first hand in my own baits. But from anecdotal evidence as well as logic, I know that my site kills do make real victims twig.

I like to think that at least one potential victim has dropped a lad for every one of my site kills. It might be more, it might be less. But I know it has made a difference, and that keeps me happy even when I sometimes get frustrated dealing with lads or intransigent hosting companies.

Sorry for being so needy, this discussion has helped me alot. I was wrong about a few things, the working at gun point and such, sometimes you get an idea in your mind and it's difficult to admit you've been thinking the wrong thing.

I picked up a few basic NOKs from surplus for straight baits while I hunt for my next love lad. And really, I do enjoy it, romance baits, but they tend to get very consuming, overwhelming sometimes. After a certain point they will put up with absolutely anything, the investment effect, and that's where I start to lose my sanity. I'm not bad person, I don't go around hurting people on purpose, but there's this dark place in my soul that emerges...I should probably just shut the hell up and let the insanity flow Very Happy

I'm not all too worried about awards in the sig line, it's not why I do this.

Glad you're feeling better. If romance baiting does play with your head then it's not surprising, it's deeply involving by the very nature of it. My last good one was years ago, i was pretending to be a woman and he was pretending to be a man. He wrote wedding invitations, took photographs and got a tattoo for me, but it consumed my days and nights and left me very drained. I tend to go after sites and product lads these days which gives me a clearer objective in terms of destroying or denying material assets in the form of domains and accounts/CCs. It's a lot easier on the mind, and your devious streak will still get used. It's just a little more orderly.

I suppose you're right. Autopsying my last one, staying in character was all uphill. I'd invented a very well developed character and I felt genuinely bad for what was happening to her. With that said my lad felt much, much worse when instead of paying him, she forgot, got plastered and bought a sports car on Ebay. Things got worse for him after that.

A contradiction in terms, perhaps, but self control is crucial to successful baiting. Timing involves waiting, calls and emails require restraint, handling vile and lazy criminals requires a delicacy of touch that doesn't alert them to the fact that they are being handled in the first place. Romance baiting isn't for me either cos the love lads turn my stomach. But, having said that, when I bait the refugee lads there's something about the camp tramps that my wealthy business man character finds irresistible - so irresistible that he can't help but turn it into a romance bait. As soon as the romance side of the bait starts turning my stomach, I unleash my secretary into the bait - she lets rip at the lad, which always make me feel better.

I haven't counted my pigs and flags lately (counting flags is tedious, and I'd rather run through my list of fake sites, which is also tedious). They're not there to score who's the best baiter (there's no exchange rate between flags and pith helmets), but to let other baiters know what kind of baiting we're good at. Sometimes people ask me for help with killing a site. I once had an opportunity (so it seemed) to safari a lad and got help from someone with lots of pith helmets. (The lad, in South Africa, had an accomplice in Mozambique, so it didn't work out.)

I was not blessed with a healthy dose of empathy. It comes in handy when baiting. I feel nothing towards the lads. I should probably hate them, but I don't. I simply do not like that they steal from others.

(No, I'm not some kind of psycopath, narcissist or whatever. I have Asperger's. And it's not so much that I actually lack empathy per se. I just have a disconnect between cognitive empathy and emotional empathy. But I'm sure nobody wants to be bored by a lecture on my brain's wiring, so back to our regularly scheduled program.)

I know I can't do romance baits - they really do turn my stomach, and there are many baiters who are former military who can't touch the "Serviceman overseas with treasure" type bait - perfectly understandable.

What I did when on the tipping point for burnout was to focus on a particular task for a while, say collecting piggies from loan-lads or learning to take down lads' websites - the latter doesn't absolutely require that you have any contact with the lads at all - and a change is as good as a rest, true to say.

Here's just one example of lads without a conscience:
