Hi everybody,
it really looks that I've got the first lads snapping for the bait. Nothing special, but as it is my first bait, I'm kind of excited. Today I even had to stop myself from replying too fast...
Any ideas how fast I can respond to their mails? Every day and there and then some days without response? |

Welcome, N-HB! Each lad is different, and each bait is different, so it's hard to say how best to time your responses. Have you procured a mentor yet? They are great at helping with this sort of question, and they can give you all sorts of other great input on issues you may not have considered.
Bait safely, and give that lad some pain!

I respond to first notes quickly and then adjust my timing based on content. If they ask for something I wait at least a day and then come back with a note that doesn't completely answer their question. Social notes get a quicker response.
Emails with few words are good for when you're (in your real life) very busy. For example, "Thanks for your note, I'm in meetings today and tomorrow, but will get back to you asap." is a good way to temporarily blow off your lad without having to drop the bait.
Don't be surprised if the bait flames out. Many do. If so, just move on to a new lad, or go back to the first one with a new character. |

Hi,
it always helps to give your char a complete personality right from the beginning, e.g. how old, what job, family, friends, enemies, location, financial situation etc.
I usually have a basic idea about my char when I first respond to the lad. E.g. oil rig worker off the Alaskan coast, Austrian retiree in Scotland, Italian secretary working abroad, Monsignore in the Vatican etc. Imho it is always helpful to put your char in a somewhat difficult environment so there are inevitably lots of potential obstacles to overcome (or not, hehehe). As the bait progresses so does my char. If you bait several lads at the same time keep a CV for each of your characters so you do not mess up the details. Throw in the occasional technical terms applicable for your char´s workplace (steal from the internet).
Build up trust by telling the lad frequently what your chars did, what bothers them, great events, nasty experiences, etc, in short anything you would email a good friend, especially if the lad urgently waits for the WU payment slip.
Rule of thumb is: lad fast - you slow and vice versa. It helps to assure him that you want to be fast also, alas the difficult circumstances...
If you want to invest some more time and energy you can even snapshot the web page of some newspaper and paste in a story of your char getting mugged on the way to pay at the bank or WU.
The sky is the limit for any bait. After a couple of successful baits you will slowly develop your personal style.
Have fun. |

My typical pattern is to answer like crazy right off the bat, nearly chat-like. It gives the little stinker the idea that I'm excited about my riches and can't wait to get the ball rolling. Once we're good and latched on, things slowly grind to a crawl as my car has trouble and the internet has trouble and western union has trouble and the bank has trouble. Late in the game, I'll have him waiting for a day or two for each and every reply, which makes the lads good and nervous.
And if he's extremely pliable/stupid, I'll thrown in a second rapid-fire character to chop him or help him to great wealth or whatever strikes my fancy. The sandtimers take a lot of patience and full-on sneakiness, but they are a blast to get! |

Hi and thanks for the welcome.
Today I managed to get a CV for my persona together. As I am sitting on a small island just off the coast and can not get to the next WU office, I asked for bank account details - for onlinebanking.
BAM! Nearly an hour later I got a bank account from him. That was easy...
I also applied for the mentoring program.
I am starting to like this. |

I'm pretty new to baiting myself. I've been at it for about two months now. I've been having a lot of success and think I'm getting the hang of it. A lot of it's just common sense. Pretend to be a gullible, out of touch wealthy person at first. Drag things out, make everything a chore for the scammer. But don't let him lose hope and be sure to make him think there's a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Once you've been talking to him and getting his confidence up throw in some kind of drama for your character. This will give you an excuse to slow things down or change direction. You're lad is going to start to get impatient and demand for money. The drama could be a car crash, a divorce, a death in the family etc. You could even get angry at the lad and stop talking to him. Then you contact him again and apologize saying you were wrong. This is good because it makes the lad think you need him and gives you a fresh change of pace. Make sure you have fun with it. Invent a character with a backstory and personality, and create the bait around that character. |

Right now, it's starting to be real fun. My lad started getting on my nerves by sending emails every two or three hours, asking when the money that I transferred will arrive. Apparently, he went to the bank as soon as I sent him the (fake) onlinebanking payment slip.
Anyway, I decided to give him a nice little slap for flooding my email account, being impolite and so on...
Let's see how he will react. |

Sounds good so far! As Kitty says, it varies by lad. Some demand constant attention and some will only reply once a day themselves, or longer, to keep you waiting. For many of them it's a power trip. They phone you at unsociable hours to make the point that they can talk to you whenever they want. They demand replies, they insist on documents, one thing and another. Usually i start out with one email per day just to see how they go and get over the initial scripted crap, then roughly match their send rate. Later, I'll feed in extra emails to give them a sense of escalation. Then phone calls, then tailored convincers like videos.. Giving a lad a sense of progress being made will keep him going at those difficult moments when he must do something really difficult <strike>so that we can ridicule him here</strike> so that his maga will pay him |
