Scentless Apprentice, in fact Scotland are playing on Saturday. And against Sweden no less, qualifier for the 2015 World Cup. So back to the original post, Dr Mike maybe you should support your women's team.

They have a good mix of experience and youthful enthusiasm, but if you with "up there" mean a contender for a place in the final, then no. They have a few good players but not anything that will get them very far in the playoff. In fact, i don't think they even reach the second round. Italy is as always good and Uruguay is lethal.

@ Scentless: You mentioned the ones i think will have a shot as well. Spain might be a bit old, many key players have reached the top. Argentina have as you say attacking flair, a solid midfield, a shaky defence and an out of form goalie, you see where i am going here. A team with good attackers will capitalize on that. Argentina isn't going further than the semifinal if even that far.

I would like to say that Germany and Brazil will play in the finals as those are the two best teams. But in order for them to both reach the final, one of the teams will have to end up in second place in their respective group, and i don't see that as likely. So these teams will play in the semi final. Brazil will win that match by and eyelash and then go on to beat a tired Spanish team in the final. Third place will go to Germany that will hammer Argentina in the bronze match.

My outsiders to reach a semifinals are Belgium, Bosnia and Italy.

I think Uruguay peaked at the last World Cup. They struggled to qualify for this one finishing 5th in
the South America qualifying group and having to rely on a play-off match to qualify.
Diego Godin aside, Uruguay's defensive department is ageing and lacks pace. Also the loss of Alvaro Saborio
was a major blow and for them to have any chance they must have Suarez fit to play.

It has begun, and not surprisingly the first goal is made by Brazil. A bit more surprising is that it was made in the wrong net.

Team USA is still evolving, adjusting, looking for its soul, tinkering, finding what works, adapting. They won't get out of group play.

I have my heart set on The Netherlands, accomplished runners-up.

On tonight's performance, I'll be surprised if Brazil even reach the final. They looked very ordinary to me, and resorted to cynical fouls, cheating and weak refereeing which clearly favoured the home side. The penalty was certainly 'won' with a dive and with a slightly better goalkeeper, would have been easily saved in any case. Their last goal was scored as a result of rare defensive errors on the part of Croatia, which gave them a gift goal which even England might have scored - if either Lineker or Shearer had been the striker. Razz

^ Yeah, can't imagine how they became African Champions. They were a shadow of their former self tonight.

The African teams has been a bit of a disappointment so far. Cameroon was horrible, while Ivory Coast played an ok match against Japan and showed some potential. I'm looking forwarid to see Ghana against the US in a short while - I hope they won't disappoint too.

EDIT. I like the Ivorian supporters, too! Very Happy
