I've got one on the line that wants me to send him money by Western Onion to Illinois. When he didn't respond to my text- through a free number app-, saying I had forgotten the details at home, I said I sent it to a friend who lived in the next town, he could drop the 5k off with his "landlady". At first, he just wanted to know when he would drop it off. Then I responded that my friend was a little concerned about dropping 5k with someone I have never met, but that he could ask for her id and I'm sure he'd be fine with that. He got upset, told me I had screwed up and said to get the friend to send me back the money, that I could paybuddy it. Now, they don't know much about paybuddy, so when asked if they would get notice that I had sent it, I said no, not until it clears through in 5-8 days.
Any advice on where to go from here? He keeps asking me to look into bank transfer. I said I don't have online banking because I pay all my bills by direct deposit.

Do you have a mentor? They are 100% risky free!

If your scammer gave you the name of a Western Union receiver, send the info to your mentor or to a mod. The receiver may be a victim. The mod will pass the info off to a scamwarner.

I would go ahead and let the lad guide you to make a bank transfer, it will get you a bank account to report.

I looked on fb and there are two accounts to the name he gave, botg in Illinois. I suspect someone has been using the name for a while.
I haven't got a mentor yet. I will have to sign up for one. This has been far more fun than I expected.
He keeps trying to switch from text to skype messages. I keep telling him skype keeps shutting down and freezes my phone.

I agree with Ginger, pass the Western Union details to a Mod and they will arrange for them to be properly investigated to see if it is a victim collecting the money for the scammer.

Should I mention the fact that for someone who was born in Italy, then moved to the states, he sure has an odd accent. How do people fall for this crap?

Many victims have never heard any accent other than what they hear on tv. The scammer usually has a story of being American, raised in Germany with a British father and Italian mother (or some variety of that) so they can explain why their accent is so 'different'.

Generally we prefer to get bank accounts from lads as we have the ability to report them and hopefully get them shut down. This can cause some serious hurt to the lad. Sometimes not just to one lad as many lads may be using one account. When you're given account info from a lad, send it via PM to a mod. Then you can add a little pink piggy to your signature line to start growing your farm. Very Happy

Usually after about 5 days for an international transfer you can go back to the lad and tell them something like 'my money bounced back to my back. They said something about your account being flagged.' That will often times get the lad to fork over some more bacon and so on. Many baiters will go through a couple rounds of wasting the lads time with western union or money gram before they will offer up a bank account. Some go straight for the account. It's all in preference but I'd say that if they offer one you should always take it.

1. What is "crap" to you might not sound like crap to someone else. For example, if you were from Costa Rica and tried to pass yourself off as Cuban, I could tell you are lying by your accent. This may sound like a tougher test than Italy vs Nigeria, but it is all relative.

2. On some level, people believe what they want to believe. This is true across socioeconomic groups and not related to intelligence. A good scam artist can exploit this.

You would be surprised at what people fall for when they actually meet a person face to face. Not much different than meeting them online. Heck, what "I" fell for in real life would have many people shaking their heads and having me bow mine down in shame. Laughing

(Watch "Who the %$&% did on marry!" on Investigation Discovery Channel (or Netflix), you'll see what I mean)

He keeps trying to tell me he doesn't have a bank account. I even tried to get him to do a sp_ts transfer, thinking it would be fun to have the pages keep telling him he screwed up and take him back to the beginning.

You can just make it a condition. No account, no money.

People fall for a lot of things, even experienced baiters. There are threads on the topic if you search around. Anyone can be scammed-it just takes the right scammer and product.

He now thinks he can get a "trusted friend" to put the money into his account. He wanted to know if there was a limit on how much the transfer service would do. Greedy, greedy. He already thinks there is a 5k deposit pending clearance.
I only respond during certain times. He has suddenly started texting at hours that I am at work. I just don't answer, I wait till my usual times. Yesterday evening I was busy, so didn't answer him and had several missed calls and a tons of texts. Those free text apps sure come in handy.

I use the orange form:
First round: Post it note over the number
Second round: give them a fake number (note what's on the form that isn't covered up and add some digits)
Third run: switch a few of the digits (oops- you accidentally got it wrong).
It can lead them to go to the MG location twice and getting totally embarased.

Grab a mentor when you can- best choice a novice baiter can make. Oh, and have fun!

Greedy piggy has offered to get a bank account so that he can get me to send more money. Said we could try it out. I said I had already tried it, sent money to Texas, was there in minutes. Said he didn't need to bother to get an account, since the paybuddy would clear soon. Now he is on about "next time".

Hi Lottsa, if you've already been offered a bank account for transfer, please PM the details to a mod. You will be doing serious damage to the scammer. Reporting the account usually results in the account being shut down. You can also award your self a Closed lad accounts

.

Generally after 3-5 business days you can tell the scammer the account was flagged and the money came back. After a little abuse about giving you a bad account, you can ask for another. Rinse and repeat.

As to the person supposed to be accepting the westurn onion money, are they usually in on it, or another person being scammed? She cancelled the 1st two paybuddy requests. He got fairly upset over it and suddenly I got another. Which I haven't responded to, but he thinks is pending clearance.

Both. The person who receives money from victims then forwards it to the lad is called a "mule". Many of them have been convinced either through a love scam or a church scam that the payments are legitimate donations or sales.

Then there are some mules that are complicit and know damned well what they are doing.

Told him I would take a day or two to decide whether I'd help with the car. So of course he quits talking for a day. Made for a nice quiet evening yesterday. Now he comes on, sends 4 texts. His son fell and broke his arm. Haha, yeahhhh, suree. Of course, I don't answer, I'm at work. More texts asking why I'm ignoring him. Lol.
