What do real victims of product lads?

A product lad sends three credit cards and tells a merchant to split the cost in small bits and charge bits on cards until it's all paid. What does a merchant usually do when told to do this? Would a real customer ever do this?

Any unusual payment behaviour ought to raise red flags to the vendor, but there are some plausible situations where this does occur. Intentionally vague as this thread is out in public, feel free to PM me if you read this and want more specifics.

Whether it's a valid thing to do or not you don't want to wise the lads up to the reality.

I like it when they ask me to spread it out. It gives me the opportunity to set the hook right where I want it while providing a ready excuse for not completing full payment.

I'll take Firehouse's response a step further. While I won't go into detail simply because it would probably bore people, I'm not actually concerned about educating scammers here because the reality is that splitting a transaction across multiple cards is not really a red flag these days. I've done it myself (and it had nothing to do with maxed-out cards, I was using up a prepaid card I have been given.) I could point out several legitimate and common scenarios in which this occurs. Even the animal shelter I work at has dealt with (legitimate) multiple-card transactions.

It is actually so common that some websites have the ability built in. When I ordered my last laptop from the manufacturer website, one of the first questions in the payment section was whether the transaction will be split across multiple cards.

One line I use which happens to be true is that banks routinely issue promotional low limits cards to folks who open accounts. Or their check ATM card has a built in limit per day or transaction. This isn't indicative of a scam or suspicious behavior but a new customer to the financial institution.

Not unusual I have seen people using two cards it is usually one debit card and a credit one to complete the purchase.
