Hi all,
I just wanted to ask if it can be dangerous to open a .jpg one of the guys has send me? And how can I check if it contains something I don't want on my pc?

If you are opening it within gmails page you will be fine, if it opens as an image then all is fine, if it has a hidden .exe extension after the .jpg it's not fine and wouldn't open as an image anyway. |

In Gmail jpgs show as thumbnails so you can tell if it's real or not. If no thumbnail shows, tread lightly. Otherwise no worries. |

JPG, GIF, and PNG files have no code, just data, so they are safe to open. PDF and PS files do have code, but I don't know that they can carry malware.
There is a setting in Windows which, if set one way (which I think is the default), shows filenames like "blabla.jpg.exe" as "blabla.jpg", which can mislead users into opening malware. If you run Windows and deal with any data sent by unknown people, always set it the other way.
Of course, the lad could have sent an infected non-JPG file renamed to "*.jpg". Check it with the file command (Unix; you can get it for Windows with Cygwin) just to make sure. |
