Hi all, am enjoying the 419 site, spent the last few hours going through some very amusing scambaits.

I just wanted to ask, as scambaiting has been going on for a long time now, I remember reading some of these stories a looooong time ago, do you find that the minute you ask the scammers to do something they just cut all communication.

I mean to start with you can understand how it worked, but as years pass, surely they have adopted to knowing legitimate targets or not, I mean if I was a scammer and someone wanted me to do a tattoo, make a video, send anything, or just anything ridiculous including names and things, I would immediately cut contact with them.

I would have thought at least it would be 90% harder from say 5-10 years ago. Maybe I am wrong, just wanted to ask about it.

It depends on how good you are at making them believe that you are a genuine victim, some will because lads are lazy, but if you manage to convince them that they will get their money soon.

The only way is to experiment and see what works

This is very true, + money can make almost anyone do crazy things.

Any tips on how I can get a email address to be a target to these lol I have not had one of these kinds of emails for such a long time now. Used to get them regularly years ago.

Generally speaking, it is more difficult now than it was 10 years ago. The more experienced lads tend to be less cooperative or more ready to drop you at the first signs of trouble.
Even the basic trophy of getting them to send a photo of them holding a sign is harder to get now, but that doesn't mean you'll never get one.
Every lad is a beginner once, and if you hook a beginner they'll be happy to send pictures sometimes right from the word go.

The key though is never to rush into things. The artform of baiting is the building up of the relationship between you, the baiter, and your lad. If you can get the lad to trust you enough, and believe enough that you're going to pay out, then you can get them to do almost anything...

Good information, I will keep that in mind and try to play it slowly. I am just trying to figure what it is I exactly want to do. I guess part and parcel of that comes from who your dealing with and what occurs.

Yes but what I don't understand is how to get them to email me, I mean isn't it better this way, than to email them directly out the blue. This part I don't understand.

^^^Pick an email from surplus and reply to them as if you received that email (I usually paste the email below my reply in the same way it would appear if I was really replying). They won't have a clue that they didn't mail you in the first place.

You email them making it look like a reply to the email you can copy/paste from the surplus section.
Lads spam out this initial email to hundreds, if not thousands of addresses. They're not going to bother checking if you were on their mailing list.
Send out replies to 4 or 5 of the most recent in the surplus section, and at least 1 of them will email you back.

EDIT= oops, B8er got there first :p

I E-mail the Refugee Scammers out of the blue all the time and have 50 - 80% replys from them. My usual format is:

Subject: You asked me to E-mail you

E-mail: Hello,
You asked me to send you a message at this E-mail address. You said you had something important to tell me. I hope to hear back from you soon.

Ok cool got it Wink Meant to ask, what do you guys do in regards to them sending emails back which maybe have attachments. Do you just scan them with anti-virus and then open.

If you are using gmail, it will allow you to preview most of the common formats without them being downloaded to your machine.

If they send you a zip file then don't touch it unless you know exactly what you are doing.

I use G-mail for my baiting. It scans every download and I've never had any problems with virus'. (So far)

Ninja'd by the BoomDazzler. I agree with the Zip files. I don't remember a Scammer ever sending me one though.

You always have to be careful with attachments. Generally, never touch zips. Gmail is good for previewing images you have sent to you, from which you can just screencap and paste into photochop and save, rather than saving the actual file to you computer.

If you really get into trophy hunting and start getting many attachments from many lads, it's well worth learning how your anti-virus works, keep it up to date at all times and learn how to make it scan your attachment before you open it.

Care needs to be taken with MS office files as well - they can contain malicious macros, which a virus checker won't pick up.

You can lock office down so that it won't run macros without confirmation (or disable them totally - I can't remember what the default option is) or do like I do and open everything using one of the free alternatives - the files open just fine, but macros are ignored.

Like OpenOffice.org
That's the one I use. Macros can be run with it, but by default they are ignored and not run. Smile

My generic response to a suspicious (or just inconvenient) file is to tell the lad that it doesn't open. After he replies you can simply ask if he can send it in a different file format.

Same thing with any files he expects you to send. Either don't send anything and just type "here" to the email or send some file that doesn't open or work at all named conveniently. Usualy they won't ask you to resend it very often as they want to move to scamming your money.

Note that we here have a policy not to send anything to a lad that he could use. This includes fake passports made for mr. Biggus Dickus and has a cartoon character's picture on it.

You'll find that there's no need to ever touch attachments when you're baiting. There's certainly no need to ever risk doing so. Sign up for a mentor, read through the pages here, bait safe, etc, and you'll find the best mechanisms to maximum lad pain!

Lads are strange creatures. You can do something you'd expect would completely blow a bait and a Lad won't blink an eyelid. I operate multiple baiting characters and the other day I replied as a female using the wrong email addie that happened to be male. With fingers crossed I explained that I had used someone else's pc and used their email address - no problem Very Happy

Then again, you can quibble over some pointless detail in their ridiculous scam format and they go ape and get very frosty.

It's like Judo, you bend to their will so that you can make them do what you want, if that doesn't sound illogical. As you go along you learn how to do it and the different methods you can use.

You get better at it with experience - ask Bertie Wooster. Just being able to bait using that name makes me smile when I get the mails come in addressed to me. It'll be even funnier if I can get him asking for me at the airport. Laughing

Psychological manipulation. Smile
It's what they try on their intended victims, but we turn the tables a bit.
