The article is not so cut-and-dried in establishing WU's complicity in scamming: starting with the "mystery shopper" scam in which the scammers purport to represent WU and coach their victims in sending the funds in a way that will avoid scrutiny. This doesn't really have anything to do with WU policies and practices.
The tone of the article headline is related to speculation that the recipients are collecting money with the assistance of corrupt WU agents who turn a blind eye to the receivers' lack of ID (based on some identified instances where agents are not checking ID sufficiently).
I imagine the real situation on the ground is more complex, and would not be at all surprised if entirely legitimate WU agents are being fooled by good quality fake ID on a regular basis (my local newsagent who provides WU services suggests fake ID is a constant problem), and truly corrupt agents may not be that common.
That said, I think it's fair game to use this article (and others like it) in baiting as a good reason to avoid WU and use legitimate, regulated international bank transfer with your scammers. |
