Although, generally, I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, in this instance, it seems that you are the one at fault here. The fact that you couldn't find the thread is, in fact, down to you - either laziness, ignorance or just shortsighted. I don't know. I'll let you choose on that one!

So in a nutshell: you're welcome to give constructive criticism - even to use flowery prose which shows us all how clever you are - but then don't go and ruin it all by pointing out that something is missing when it very clearly isn't.

Otherwise, you don't look like a newb. You just look silly.

I wonder if the Newby FAQ threads can't be changed to a different color like the Cherry Mentoring thread. (I suggest Flame Red) Maybe something like that would be helpful to them. We long-standing members could just tell the Newby's to read everything that is Red and then ask if they can't find what they need.

(Yuppers, that'll be two more cents please)

As a fairly new chap of average intillejence (Yes it is a Desmond, I got, those with firsts are just pretentious!) I have to take a contrary stance to the OP.

I have had people argue with me on here, politely, with passion and conviction and not once have I thought, "My views are less important because I am new." Normally the prevalent attitude is about tenure, in interwebs landz.

Not the case here, people genuinely go out of their way to equip you to cause as much damage to our friends who try to part the vulnerable from what is theirs. The esprit de corps is a joy to behold.

Have you signed up for a mentor? I have not felt the need to disturb mine in a week but the security of knowing he is but an email away is priceless.

The whole idea of a Sticky is that it's there because it should be read first.

That's a generous offer, but please be selective. We fully expect to find dead links in threads that are several years old. This is a living forum and much of the content is that is intended to provide help or support has a short shelf life. There are over a million posts here, please check the expiration dates before taking a swig.

What's the point of dead links, especially if they're part of an ongoing reference thread? They serve no purpose. So I would think by 'selective' to mean nothing more than 'Does this link work Yes/No'.

If you wish to leave dead links there as some sort of pointless trip down memory lane, with absolutely zero value to users, then there's nothing for me to contribute in the cleanup. Or rather, there IS no cleanup to do, if I'm to understand your post.

If you're finding dead links in active threads, such as the one you referenced, I suppose we could clean them up. That thread does span five years though, and I think it's reasonable to expect that the newer posts will have more reliable information than the older ones, and that most users will recognize that fact, or learn it quickly enough.

My point was that I don't see much value in going through obsolete posts and long dead threads to remove links that are also dead. I agree they serve no purpose, but time we put into anything is competition for time needed on something else. It's all about balancing priorities with resources.

Dead-right about time bringing obsolescence, as some of our senior members would say, if anyone were listening that is. Whenever I'm looking for something I start at the last page not the first.

If there comes a time to cut the old out of date posts in that thread, I vote for NO, don't do it. There are ideas in there which can be recycled/transformed and put to fresh use again, I think of it as historical inspiration.

As to my new Swedish mentee he would very much appreciate the recording with a Swedish accent, that sing-song accent is one of his favourite cures for insomnia.

I read the initial post and I became a bit lost as everything that was mentioned that the board was lacking, is actually clearly marked.

Perhaps it's because I have been on the interwebs before there was an interface for bulletin boards or newsgroups, (talk about a horrendous mess) that I might be able to navigate a new forum easier than most newbies. I have only been a short time and I have never been at a loss of what or where something was or how to perform a specific task. If I couldn't find it, I knew I could start a post and ask my question without fear of ridicule.

I have also been an admin/moderator for an active community and know how much work goes on behind the scenes to make the community as welcoming as possible, all on my free time and completely voluntary. Heck, the board I volunteered at, you couldn't even say "ass" let alone "shit". You know how difficult it is to chastise an adult that they can't say "shit"? You wouldn't believe the words and phrases I learned by telling someone that if they didn't stop, they would be banned from a board. So, I can empathize with the powers that be at all the hard work they do, so much of it thankless and unseen, when they see a thread criticizing the work they have tried to keep as welcoming and easy to navigate for all the new members. If a new member can't understand that a dead link in a thread that is closed, let alone over 5 years olds, is not a priority, well, there just isn't a way to please everyone.

I would rather have the admins/moderators wasting lads time and keeping them away from real victims, then making sure every link in every post is updated. But that's just me.

Everyone processes information and organizes things in different ways. It's what make us unique as individual. It's also why you can't please everyone all the time.

If you can't find something or don't understand something, ask. This is the MOST welcoming and helpful board I have ever been to. It amazes me that so many individuals come together for a common cause, to make sure people they don't know won't get scammed. I am honored to be a part of it, and I am thankful for all the members who welcomed me and helped me when I first came. I can say with certainty, that the helpful nature of this board is the glue that keeps it together and makes it the most successful baiting forum out here today. Warts and all.

I just hope that I can give back half as much as has been given to me. Razz

With all due respect to everyone, links and such change all the time. It's a dynamic and fluid thing. For instance, site killing -- no I'm not trolling or suggesting that you try it -- but we deal with change all the time. Abuse responders might leave for different quarters; we may find lads using a new template we haven't seen before; there might be a new reseller. Etc.

We're like Silly Putty, I guess. If it sticks to the wall once, yay. But there's no guarantee it will stick twice. If it doesn't, we try to find out why and where the lad is next.

Fixing links? OK. But in my humble opinion our efforts are better spent in finding lads and helping potential victims than fixing stuff that may no longer be relevant.

Agree about the site killing, troll away! More people are needed. I had to take time off right when I got started, had real life health stuff I needed to take care of, but I know no matter what, when I get back into it, you all will help me out until I get the hang of it. El Capitan spent 3 hours on a lovely Sunday afternoon giving me a tutorial via Skype! How many people would volunteer their time like that but a fellow baiter? Not many, I can assure you that.

I also want to say that for not the help of the members here, I never would have received my first piggy or my two flags! So, if anyone, new and old, needs help, there is always a friendly face to give a helping hand.
