Good job I have anti-virus protection, the link I had to click on to send the form, came as having the virus. Just blasted my lad in capitals for it.

Warning to new members to ensure, not only are they baiting safe but to have paid for anti-virus protection.

I have AVG, now there will be other members posting on what protection is best. Laughing

^^You don't need to pay for the operating system, let alone virus protection. I have Linux and BSD computers.

Using Linux, antivirus not necessary; at my Win-machine I have Kaspersky.

I find that wearing a condom whenever using the computer is entirely sufficient.

For windows i use Avast, so far never had an issue with it.

As for linux, as much as there are less viruses about for that OS the complacency that linux is virus free is wrong. Linux viruses DO exist and anyone who runs any OS without antiviral protection is in my opinion crazy.

I get around the problem this way:

I use an old computer and have installed '98SE on it, along with the necessary tools such as Photoshop, e-mail client etc.

I have also installed Clamwin antivirus. It's only an on-demand scanner but may catch dodgy attachments if I scan them first before opening them.

I then create an image of the installation, saved to another partition.

So - if I do get caught, I simply reinstate the image, takes about 3 minutes.
E-mails are backed up at a click using a batch file.

This system has worked well for me, and for when my kids were younger was a godsend, as they seemed to be able to catch anything and everything.

Thanks for bringing this topic up! For those of us that aren't computer geniuses (but not total idiots either) and use a PC with windows 8 what is a good choice for us to use? I currently use the free version of AVG along with Malwarebytes & Spybot among a couple others if needed. Anything a lad sends me I scan it with avg first.

I'm sure everyone has an opinion of something better. I was going to buy AVG but they charge your card every year and that always sounds like a nightmare so I haven't yet.

^^^That combination is as good as any. I use the free version of Avast! and regular scans with Malwarebytes.

In my experience, .doc, .pdf and .jpg files are not infected - and those are the file formats a lad normally will send you. If you are in doubt, open and view them in your Gmail box instead of downloading. I usually dont hesitate to open any of the said formats, but I never EVER download any executable files sent from a lad (or anyone I don't know, for that matter)! And links sent from lads should be given the same caution as any other link sent to yu from an unknown person - do not click them!

I'm in my 4th year as a baiter now, I've stuck by the above rule, and I've never had any virus infection caused by lads on my PC - I've actually had more PC problems caused by Windows 8 than by virus.

However, IF you can't control your urge to see what's at the other end of that link you've been sent, there is a way to do it safely - Sandboxie. Basically, it takes a portion of your HD and isolates it from all other parts of your installation. This way, even if you get an infection, it will not interfere with any parts of your installation, and is easily detected and removed. Read more at www.sandboxie.com.

Gmail at least won't let you send (or presumably, receive) a .EXE, .BAT or similar executable file.

Avast has a sandbox too, unfamiliar programs are executed in this before they are un-quarrantined so that their function can be determined. It's pretty handy.

True, but I have been getting dodgy emails recently with unknown .zip files attached. I have no intention of finding out what's in them.
