Love scammer is my first bait in years (now with break up!)

Via a dating site, I have a scammer in Ghana who has fallen in love with me after 2 hours and apparently we will spend the rest of our lives together. It was really beautiful. They'll probably need money from me at some point; that's where the fun can begin. It's interesting - the photo they sent is a European female but they write in an African way. The photo is also online under another name. This scammer uses many of the same phrases as another one yesterday - almost as if they're using the same script (ahem). But I'm willing to overlook all that for love.

They want to speak on the phone at some point and I'm still figuring out how to do that, as in actually speak but anonymously.

Anyway, my bride-to-be is Priscilla and here's some highlights of the chat to date. I am the principal of a Catholic school, a devout Christian, rather rich and drive a Mercedes. We are chatting via Yahoo Messenger, a lad favourite :

After a fruitless trip to the money gram office to collect the $200 you can create a unopenable file here clicky and save as money gram receipt.jpg as proof. Make it really large so it costs him time and money to down load.

This may be a great set up for a piggy-no, your character doesn't use those scumbag money transfer services-bank to bank transfers which are free, insured and safe. The love of your life deserves no less.

Re phones. I almost never phone bait. Give'em the K7 or Google voice or skype number and explain your're not set up for international calls. Or your job requires you to leave your phone off as a safety measure. Or it's paid for by someone who wouldn't appreciate the charges for an international call. If all else fails> Of course your character isn't in and the lad will have to leave a message. you can get a cheap SIM or a "burner" phone, and make the lad call you

Thanks for all the ideas! I'm baiting as an Australian (but in a different city), but the various phone excuses or K7 should work fine.

I'm liking the idea of an unopenable receipt that agnomen mentioned. I'll see how the whim strikes me at the time. But all good ideas. Obviously, I'll get the details wrong a couple of times before I get to the receipt anyway.

We have had a one-way conversation via Yahoo messenger but gee, on her side her cam and mic don't work so she couldn't talk to me. A cynical person might say that's because this person looks nothing like the pictures they've been sending me. But I am not a cynical person.

Such a person might also wonder if $200 is this scammer's only endgame because once they have a cam, they'd be able to use it and I would see it's not the love of my life in the pictures. Or I guess the cam might be broken. Moot point anyway.

I've been semi-baiting another love scammer, and we were forming a strong bond after an hour - I imagine it would end in love and marriage just as easily. Like others, they insisted I closed down my dating site profile and then sent me messages there later saying "why are you still here?" Clearly this needed a good slapping. They haven't come back to Yahoo to read it yet though.

Well that's interesting. The PO Box I've been given to send the Moneygram order to - I think I'll send a little more than she asked so she can get a really good webcam - belongs to Ghana Missions.

She has decided to forego the $200 cam and instead needs me to pay all the fees for her to travel here as soon as she can. Isn't that great? It's around $2400 all up but that's fine, anything for love. The form she sent almost looks nearly authentic, so no problem there. She'll be really hurt if I disappoint her, apparently.

Well this is interesting. I got my lovely fiancee to send me an email at a nice new address of mine. Just did a header trace, and it's likeliest the email was sent from Canada. But the PO Box given to send money was in Ghana, at this "Ghana Missions" place. Is it possibly a front for scamming, and lets its "employees" from around the world use it for collecting money? Hmmm....

And is "Priscilla Addo" an actual person there as their name is used in the address, complicit in the scheme and letting this scammer use their name for the purpose?? Hmmm again.

I'll send her the $2400 by Moneygram tomorrow and let her know straight away! Then she can fy from Ghana to Australia and we can be married!

I hope nothing happens, like for example - I get the numbers wrong a couple of times so she has to keep going back to the office there. Then she gets a receipt she can't open. Then hopefully she sends a bank account # instead. Then the school discovers I used official funds for the transfer and I need to make myself scarce because I'm going to be arrested. I will still want to give her the money and marry once it all blows over, but she'll have to nominate someone coming to see me in my hiding place because I can't be seen otherwise. That could turn into a safari for the scammer or their friend.

Another character could come along who is the go-between for her and me, and reassures her the money is safe but she needs to do what she's instructed or she won't get it. Probably a priest, they're always trustworthy.

That's all one possibility anyway.

In the spirit of true love, I sent my beloved more than she asked for via Moneygram. It was $2473 for the airfare but I rounded it up to $3000 so she could still get a webcam and something nice to wear when we first meet. This would have made her very happy. I sent her off the code, but...

Oh dear, things aren't going at all as planned. Not by my beloved Priscilla anyway. She is my queen, and I will not desert her however.

I am being understanding and lovely with it all though, which she appreciates. There have been 2 fruitless Moneygram visits and an unopenable receipt jpg so far. It must be frustrating for her knowing $3000 is waiting there for her just out of reach. When I attempt to speak to the manager tomorrow he will be out, and away until next week. What I will do to make my wonderful fiancee happier though is to add $50 to the total for each day she doesn't get the money. That should keep her interested.

CMT, I checked the ghanamissions web site using whois and the site is registered to this Ted Wheeler guy. The web site is mostly broken links and place holder text. Click on the "Get Involved" link at the top if the page to see what I mean. I did more research on Ted Wheeler, and he is a real church of Christ preacher and really does have a mission in Ghana. He's not too good with web sites though. Very Happy

I have run into a similar situation in Benin once. Scammers become members of the mission for the sole purpose of having a legitimate address to get mail. Many places in West Africa have no home mail delivery, so a real address is a gold mine (so to speak). "Priscilla" used her fake name to join the mission, and any mail for is given to "her" when she goes for services (and a good meal, usually). After being fed, "she" makes off with the money from the mugu. Pretty despicable bunch.

Thanks for the detective work there, ScrewEmAll! That implies to me that this definitely is a female scammer as they couldn't use the Priscilla name too convincingly otherwise...

She has come up with the idea

Priscilla might really be a female, but it might be a setup by the lads. Priscilla signs up with the mission but then introduces her "brother", who she says can pick up he mail. One Priscilla can go around to a bunch of missions but have lads get her mail anyway. The entire church story may be a fake, since all four of those missions have the same PO box. OTOH, legitimate missions in the same area do share PO boxes to save on costs. Hard to tell without being there.

You can always send "her' the MoneyGram security form to fill out, since the manager said every international transfer needs one completed before the money is sent. Once that form gets completed (which will take several tries), you can start sending the blurry receipts. One trick I've used lately, after the blurry receipts start getting old, is to use the fake newspaper site to generate an article on how the MG manager was arrested for stealing customer money. Of course, he stole your money...all of it...now what? Time for a bank transfer. Laughing

Interesting. I'd forgotten about the fake Moneygram forms, that really should be the next step. In fact, my beloved Priscilla just sent an email saying she hasn't heard from me.

Your scenario is not dissimilar to the one I've been thinking of, except I'm the one who gets arrested. I'm a school principal and I've used school money to pay for my Priscilla's trip here to marry me. I keep taking a little at a time. I guess that will catch up with me before long and another character can be the go-between while I'm in hiding. (Luckily, I know someone who's a graphic designer by trade for any proof of my being wanted by the police. Smile

)

This could all drag out over quite a long time though. I hope it doesn't take too long, as I am already in the process of booking the church for our wedding.

CMT, while your idea has many interesting possibilities, I wonder if your lad, if he thinks you are in serious legal trouble with the police, won't just drop you like a hot potato? In my experience, most criminals don't want any ties to someone who's already in custody. That's why I suggested having the MG manager getting busted. Serves the same purpose, but the poor Principal won't have a rap sheet. Shocked

They checked something and let me know that when it comes to money transfers to certain countries, including Ghana, the person who is receiving the money needs to fill in a form, to confirm the money is to be used for legal purposes.

I don't know why they couldn't have told me this the first time and saved all this trouble. But anyway, I have taken the time to scan the forms and I can send them to you whenever you like. Then you just fill them in, scan them and send them back to me and I will give them to Moneygram here.

My darling, I hope you don't mind but because I know this business has made both of us a little distressed, I wanted to make it up to you somehow.
