Ok, so I replied to a letter, the usual “Mr & Mrs so and so one a fortune on the lottery and want to share it with you. The strange thing is, they said they were British, even had a link to the BBC video of “them” being interviewed. So of course, I'd love a big slice o' lottery cash!

I am sorry for my delay in getting back to you, I have recently joined a church and I have been very busy arranging charitable events at this most holy of times. I read the guidelines for opening the account, but why do I need to open a non resident account when I live in the UK?

I think you got him off the script and he didn't know how to respond. You could in the future suggest that you could open a regular account instead. You might even get away with it even now if you were to suggest it.

Then again he may have handed the information over to a lad in UK who knew where you "live".

I don't think you have necessarily been dropped, sometimes lads slow down during the holiday season & take a while to get back up to speed.

It may be that you need to chase the "bank manager" with another email, perhaps slightly more serious in tone. However, the whole framework of this scam depends on your setting up the "international account" and making the necessary "deposit". By causing problems with the basic details of this exchange (ie, stating that you live in the UK and thus do not need such an account) you've undermined the central scam setup. A very reasonable question but in baiting sometimes "reasonable" questions cause problems.

Some lads will be more flexible in these cases & come up with another angle to try and extract the money - but others will just drop you as too much trouble. In this case, if you have really been dropped you might take solace in the fact that a real victim in the UK who asks a similar question might also be dropped!
