I've had a few of these calls and, having resisted the temptation to tell him to fulk off (my usual reaction), I can be assured of lots more.
I was hoping I could keep him occupied for a while but the call went on and on and on, as I made up details and wrote notes on the back of a cigarette packet - but then I ran out of cigarette packet.
I can't believe these people are very successful, but they look like a legitimate baiting target so I'll set up a mailbox to match the details I gave and await their next call.
I'd love to know who they're connected with in the UK as they undoubtedly pass on the information they collect as leads to some ambulance chasing company. |

There's a similar scam here in the US, but this one is fueled by the obituary section of the newspaper. Within a week of my father-in-law's funeral, my mother-in-law got a call telling her that he had left behind a debt that needed to be taken care of. She didn't know anything about it and asked for his number so she could have someone call him and, as you might imagine, he just told her to check on things and he'd call her back.
He called several times, getting more belligerent and threatening every time, to the point where he swore he was going to come to her house and take whatever he wanted and make her "pay". Threatening an 85-year old woman? What a scumbag.
It all blew up on him when she handed the phone to one of the nephews, who said he was the manager of the deceased's affairs, and he kept the punk on the phone for a long, long time. Eventually, the nephew "identified" himself as a police officer and thanked the little turd for staying on the line long enough for his number to be traced and >click<, he was gone.
These are seriously low-life leeches. Sad. |
