This report, http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/363/enforcers?act=1, was about people who lured a scammer to Chad. But there was another story posted, here http://www.419eater.com/html/RoadToChadDarfur/. Did these guys lure two different scam groups into chad?!?!

Also, can you be sure in general that people are, in fact, scammers? Unless you recognize the scam, isn't it sometimes hard to tell? Obviously sometimes the premise is ridiculous, but what about when someone uses complicated language and clearly shows competence, like in the second link I posted? Is there a way to get them to show themselves as scammers?

Yes. As a rule of thumb we only bait people who contact us, and the accounts they contact are set up so that they only attract scam mails. For instance, I know exactly how and in which places I have intentionally shared my "catcher" account and I can count those places with one hand's fingers. There is absolutely no chance that anyone would legitimately want to contact that account.

What about that? I, as a non-native speaker, have written my master's thesis in university in English. A short novel worth of pages of very complicated language with the whole point being showing my competence on the subject. Does that mean I can't be a scammer?

Hi aos, welcome to Eater. I second Duckling's points. Competence in English does not rule out scam. Advanced fee fraud is carried out in all languages. It's not only the source but the pattern that determines that it's a scam.

Anyway, a good baiter knows not only that its a scam, but how the scam works, if in doubt just straight bait until 'Western Union' gets a mention.

I think the original question has not been answered. Yes, those were indeed two different groups of scammers. It takes a talented safari baiter to be able to pull that off, and the authors of those baits were some of the best.

And yes, with experience it gets pretty easy to spot the scammers. It's rare that I see a scam script that I have never seen before. And the way to get them to show themselves as scammers is to get them off their scripts. Once they are off script, their English skills usually deteriorate and they get more eager for the cash.

Take a look in the surplus forum - there is a constant stream of new messages posted in there - just pick one that takes your fancy and write back to them (they won't have a clue that they never wrote to you in the first place).

You could also sign up for the lad transit http://forum.419eater.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=219874, which should provide you with more lads than you can handle (not sure when it is next due to run).

^^^Those flags represent the lad websites he's killed. Each time you kill a site you can put the flag of the country where the site claimed to be located in your signature line. If you're curious about what everyone's sig line icons mean, this would be a good place to look:
