I think WU and Moneygram both need 10-digit codes. Let's say I give the lad 8 of them, but make him jump through impossible hoops for the last two. Would WU or Moneygram let him try 100 different combinations to exhaust all possibilites. I guess giving him 7 and expecting him to search for the other 999 would be going too far, but I wonder if they would try?

IIRC WU have 10 digits, MG have 8, so I always find 9 suitably annoying either way.

How tolerant are they? Depends entirely on the store, but that 1 missing/excess digit could be from anywhere in the MTCN, not necessarily the last one. Remember the store get a slice of the payday, so pretty tolerant.

Also, if you can get your lad into moneygram instead of Westy, you cannot check a MTCN for moneygram online (but you can with Westy), so MG means he actually has to get off his backside to find out he hasn't got any money, no lounging around the cyber cafe for him...

I was thinking of a modality along the lines of telling him that for security reasons I would not put the full number in an email. I would give him the first 8 digits. but he would have to get the other two by phoning Tracy. But if Tracy can't be reached, he might try an exhaustive search of the last 2 or 3 digits.

I was wondering if WU would stop such a thing if too many wrong guesses were made from the same IP address. I guess he could always visit another internet cafe which will have a different IP address Smile

Even sitting at a computer, trying 100 combinations of two digits woujld be pretty damm tedious.

Given the level of fraudulent activity in some countries I've always wondered why WU and MG have not simply shut down their operations in Nigeria and Ghana? They get a black eye over this. A lot of people immediately associate WU with scams.

^^^ Western union and Moneygram take a small portion of the money that the scammer gets.
