Terrible to watch the news today. Here in Denmark, our thoughts are with our Norwegian brothers. I don't know if there are any active Norwegian baiters, but this one goes out to all of you Norsemen, lurkers and baiters alike. Don't ever change your ways, but stand firm. Your nation is an example to the rest of us.

Initially, I was shocked at the destruction! I was relieved that the death toll was so low.
Then came the news of the youth camp.

^^^ It seems this was actually a Norwegian person. They apprehended the shooter from the island, and the information released about him at this point says he's of Norwegian background. So he was actually doing it in his own country... I think I'll just vote for the second option. Sad

The people attacked in the island incident was a congress for the Social Democrat Youth Organization, and the Norwegian Prime Minister was scheduled to speak there. This fact, coupled with the fact that the bombing was outside the Prime Ministers Office suggest to me, that it is either a small group of extreme right wing elements, or the act of some crazy lone wolf. AFAIK, that seems to be the theory the Norwegian police is following, too, but it's still very early, and they are not telling even a fraction of what they know.

I'm reminded of the furore after the Oklahoma City bombing when Moslem terrorists were in the frame for it; I actually wondered at the time if it wasn't closer to home - I even referenced The Turner Diaries (which was actually McVeigh's inspiration).

Heartfelt sympathy to the Norwegians!! I am horror stricken that children were targeted. No Islamic threat though? I had at first heard it was related to an extremist awaiting deportation. Either way still very very tragic.

As a Scandinavian this affects me much and i do know several people living in Oslo. I do hope that they are alright. When i came home from work yesterday my girl told me that something have happened in Oslo and there were some causalities. It' wasn't until later that i realized that it had been a gross understatement. But then again, information is often sketchy at the beginning of such events.

Even though the man have been arrested and evidence points toward him being the man behind both attacks the motive still remains a mystery.
Right wing Christian someone said and that might be true but one must also know that extreme nationalism isn't that violent in Scandinavia in the last couple of years and especially not together with religion. But on the other hand there is no denying that both attacks was aimed at political targets. If his goal was to just to shoot as many people as possible he could have had better opportunities to do so at other locations. Besides the youth camp was at an island and he'd must have known it was there and just not happened to stumble on it. So concerning the motive i'd definitely say it is political. But i am not yet convinced that it is nationalistic or religious.
It just be so simple that the man felt slighted by something that the sitting government did and decided to take it out on as many social democrats as possible.

E.T.A. The media now reports that he killed 84 people on the island. But they are still searching for more bodies in the water. And that is not including the 7 that got killed in the bombing.

My thoughts are with all those affected by this horrible event

My son and 2 friends were in Norway this spring, they described a welcoming friendly country.
So sad to think so many of the same age have been killed by one warped person
No reason can justify a massacre like this.

My kids have reported all their Norwegian friends are safe and well but angry/outraged.

In the democratic countries, our staunch defence of freedom of speech is often used against us. It's time we got a little tougher on inflammatory rants which have no place in a democratic society IMO. This applies to both whacko right and left. The loonies who do these things don't give a damn about freedom of speech until it suits them, to claim their own rights are being suppressed. They'd take all our freedoms away in a heartbeat.

The Norwegian people resisted an invading, extreme rightwing tyranny 70 years ago. Now they have an element of it within resorting to murdering their own people, and they'll never surrender to it.

Thoughts are with all those affected by this atrocity.

I was off the computer for the entire day yesterday, and I don't have regular broadcast TV. And nothing on Yahoo News at first, so I had to search what you were talking about.

This is sick, plain and simple. Is this guy actually in custody? And it shows whack jobs come across in all races, beliefs and nationalities. So sorry to hear of this!!

When I watch the news about a car accident involving the deaths of 3 or 4 teens it bothers me big time. Having taught thousands of teens over three decades, I have come to know how huge a loss it is for everyone.

To have that many young kids butchered on an island and hundreds more wounded and traumatized is almost impossible to compute.

Forget the politics, the guy must be very sick. There are Timothy McVeighs everywhere. Sad

Censorship of speech has no place on either side. Throwing out the baby with the bathwater I believe is the saying.

The actor in the crime has been caught, alive and apparently a second person is being held as well from what I have read. Not sure of what's in progress over there. I can only pray that comfort comes to the families of the victims and their country.

I say like Koko, any scam letters beginning with the "Hello Sir. I was om Utöya on the dreadful day..." or something alike, send one to me too if you come across them.

Also a bit of a side note to Badgers comment. There was a second man arrested. He was arrested for carrying a concealed knife in the vicinity of Norwegian Prime minister Jens Stoltenberg. He could have had intention of attacking Stoltenberg. But just as easily he could be a moron figuring that carrying a knife for protection against shooters and bombs is probably a good idea. Turned out it wasn't if that is the case. And that is also what he claimed when apprehended.

Very sad indeed. I had a hard tome reading about the children murdered. So senseless. I would say thought to those affected but I think we are all affected on a certain level when something like this happens. My prayers are with those who lost friends family.

At this moment I am relieved that arch-conspiracist Joe Vialls is dead - to him, every tragedy like this was an opportunity to stoke the fires of his New World Order paranoia, as he did with Port Arthur and Martin Bryant.
