Edit: read the newest post. I may be baiting a minor right out of primary school.
What do I do now?

I got this lad with really bad english skills. I thought the language barrier was a problem. I think I got a low paid grunt to get vics hooked and then get passed up the chain to cause confusion on the vic and get a WU.

This is from a gmail account. The user is chike2all. I haven't submitted it to be toasted yet. He seems fairly harmless with a huge language barrier.

It is a little lengthy and a long running bait. I about dropped it a few times out of frustration.

This one is still slogging on at a turtle's pace.

I pulled up a random Haiti earthquake and asked about him.

I hope you are OK. As I mentioned before, our church is raising funds and is already supporting efforts in Hati. We have received reports of problems at the Western Union offices as cash is is short supply. Many offices have lines that extend for blocks with lines forming 5 hours before they open. There are many fights in line. To make matters worse, there is corruption with many offices charging extra 10% to receive cash. Due to these issues, we are not using Western Union.

We ship directly to the school where the ****s are missionaries. Due to the shortage of goods, hyperinflation is a problem as the money that poured into the country is all tryiing to buy the same essentials. For this reason much of the aid is sent as goods instead of cash. Clothing, canned goods, portable cooking supplies, tarps, and other supplies for temporary shelter is being sent. The school is a ***** ministrery at the ******. The **** has a very large yard which became an instant refugee camp with over 1,000 people now living on the lawn.

The main building was damaged as the quake struck while class was in session. We are all saddened by the loss of 2 students.

Some of the issues facing the school at the moment is the need for sanitation and clean drinking water. The ******s are pretty busy trying to keep everything running smoothly. Our prayers and support go there.

You never did tell me where you are located now and where you were in the quake. I hope you have a safe place to stay with good food and water.

A bank transfer is safe as someone reading the transfer info can't steal the transfer money. Wire transfer only please. There is no way to do a stop payment or reverse the charge on a stolen WU payment like there is on a bank transfer. Only the real owner of the account can get the funds.

My lad wrote to tell me to use Western Union and not send him the MCTN, but to call him with it. This pretty much cconfirms my earlier thought this is a low paid guy working for a boss. He is attempting to pass me up the chain with a new email and phone number.

I used the language barrier in our past conversations to slap him for the recommendation and told him I'm not going to talk to a language impaired person over the phone for an hour trying to get him the number. With that I politely told him good bye and wished him good luck as I was sending the money to those in Haiti who need it.

I noticed the bank info arrived properly formated and in all caps. I highly suspect the oga wrote it for him. I think I was supposed to go to the new email to get this info as I was passed up a level in the orginization. I avoided direct contact with the oga by simply asking my lad "why the new email? This one works fine." There was a letter back and forth just to confirm he "got my reply to the new email. We may save the new email for an ASE letter.

I'll toy with this one some more and see where it leads. He doesn't know he has been burned yet.

In the course of this bait aftermath and the putting off the lad until the church raises more money for the relief effort, I have run into a moral problem. There is a very good chance my lad is just entering high school. Is he game or should I chew him out and tell him this is a way to get started paying big boy crime punishment?

I'm at a loss of what i should do with this one. I'm working on photos of him and his grandmother at his school. Is there a policy when a bait turns out to be a minor child?

So far there has been no adult content. I'll keep it that way. I wouldn't want to run into child porn laws or child exploit laws. Please bear this in mind.

EDIT; I just compiled a list of all the dates and times he wrote me. It is consitant with a child's school schedule. He mails me on the way to school as he appears to have about a half hour in the morning, which may explain some very brief mail. He is in a rush, and then relatively early afternoons till about dinner time. Rarely has he sent any late evening Nigerian time mail. There are a few weekend mail, but most are consistant with a stop by an internet cafe on his way to and from school. If this a job, it has a short work day with hours most likely from 9-3.

Any recommendations on what to do with a minor lad?

1) Lads lie. Whatever he has told you about himself is not necessarily anything like the truth. He may be 50 years old and a grandfather.

2) Lads without much spare money will also buy ten minutes internet time here and ten minutes internet time there. They will also get into a pattern with going to the internet café, and it may not mean any more than that. Married men, in particular, may not be keen on late nights at the internet café, because they have other things they would like to do at home.

3) If the Lad IS young, however, my inclination would be to bait the hell out of him, with as many characters as I have time for, many of whom would just laugh at his pathetic scamming attempts. I'd want to put him off for life. I'd want to stop him thinking that scamming is a good use of time, and liable to be successful. I'd want to totally undermine his confidence in himself as a scammer.

4) If he is old enough to try and trick people the world over, and steal their money, then he is old enough to take whatever comes to him in return.

You will probably get more responses and opinions if you post this dilemma in Help, Hints, & Tips - I imagine that a lot of people (including myself) don't read Published Work as often as as they read that forum.

I have as much ethical concern for this lad as he would have for someone's grandmother if he managed to swindle her out of all of her life's savings, which is to say none at all.

My only other thought about a young lad such as this is that he will have that much longer to enjoy whatever tatoos he can be persuaded to have applied. Twisted Evil

I agree with Branwen, etc. Bait him as an adult. Perhaps you have a chance to deter him before he's set in his ways. If not, he's bound to be baited sooner or later, why not now.

Brawen's other point is valid too, he could well be lying to you.

Ultimately it comes down to your own sense of ethics. If that's a place where you would draw a line, drop him. There are plenty of veteran scammers out there to choose from, and it's important to stay true to your principles.

I am still dangling the lad on the hook with a very slight possibility of a scholarship.

This will need some information about his school, classes, teachers, etc. Photos have been requested of the school sign out front of the building.

He sent some photos of a multi story building that could be a hotel or apartment complex. There is no idetifying sign or photos of the first floor. I responded re-stating the requirements list that is needed for the church to consider.

I mentioned an old laptop I no longer need or use because I bought a new one. Would he like me to ship it to him? You can guess where this is going.

I seem to be out of funds for shipping at the moment. I won'der if he can use a Windows 3.1 laptop with a 20 meg hard drive. He can have it if he pays shipping. This is before wireless, networking (remember Windows for Networks?) This will be sent without a modem or network adapter. This is a floppy drive laptop. No CD ROM. Very Happy

Heavy and as useful as a brick. It does have MS Word on it. I think it has at least 1 Meg of memory. I need to fire it up for some photos to send him.
I won't tell him the HD size or RAM size or Windows is version 3.1. He won't believe I have that ancient of a machine to send him. I don't have a USB thumb drive as small as that hard drive.

I'm going to go ahead and bait him, but avoid anything they could be considered child porn. Sorry.

Update on his OGA. 2nd piggy delivered. I had a short conservation with myself from another country (Cayman Islands) about a problem with a payment.

The oga was ASEM BCC'ed one side of the conversation and suggested another bank as the one was not working.

The oga jumped on the chance and tried to dolla chop the transfer. Bait taken hook line and sinker. He tried to reply as the Cayman friend with the bad bank info by suggesting another bank. The details were missing the account holder name, so I replied. A reply came back as well as a reply from my Cayman friend. I thanked the Cayman friend for the new account and replied the second account is not needed as the other Cayman one worked fine. I asked the Cayman persona about the late fee due to the bank transfer problem.

The oga went ahead and gave me the name on the account. I relied that I already stated it was no longer needed as the transfer completed fine into the Cayman account. I then thanked him for taking care of the late fee because the transfer was late due to a bank problem on his bank.

Poor oga. His chop failed due to the lack of complete information.. This is the second piggy that I don't have to attempt to transfer into and let him know there is a problem. I hope it is dead for any real vics without him knowing it is already deaded. I'm not warning him there is a problem at the bank. @@@@ has been given the details.

The oga was never given an amount of the transfer. I wonder if he lies awake at night dreaming of how much the transfer was that he just missed. Rolling Eyes
