As a newbie, I'm curious why experienced baiters often misspell the name of a spammer, usually by swapping in numbers for letters, like 4 for A, or 3 for E. |

Well, it's called leeting. We do this to hide their names from searchbots like google. We don't want our lads to come to this site when they google their own names. When we alter their names slightly, they won't find us. I am not a great fan of this, since it is really annoying for people with text to speech software. So, if you use it, don't overdo it. When your scammer is called Elena, there's no need to call her 313n4 on here. One letter is enough. Or even better, just use another name on the forums while the bait is still going.
Hope this answers your question
(oh, and it's scammer, not spammer. Although they both deserve to be put on a sand-paper hill that leads to a swimming pool filled with lemon juice.) |

Hi Superwizard! Welcome to eater!
Regarding leeting, to my knowledge only the main scambaiting forum, publish your work here and surplus letters are googleable.
Happy baiting! |

Sounds like a good initiation for a church bait. |

Alternatives to obfuscating ("leeting" is what nerds call it), are using the "mask" tags, rechristening your lads for the forum, and misspelling the name homophonously.
For example:
Masking:
Written like so \/
| Code: |
| [mask]Soludo[/mask] |
Misspelling: Saludo, Suludo, Soludu, etc.
Rechristening: Dickface
There's very little difference between these, apart from masking which takes up some bandwidth. As Cal said, the reason we do it so that one of our epic baits doesn't get murdered by the lad googling certain elements just before the climax.

I am wondering should those who post in the surplus forum obfuscate these names as well? Even if baiters do obfuscate scammers names, technically their names still could come up in the surplus section... Hrmm.. Thoughts? |

No, we prefer that names aren't obfuscated in Surplus. First, we'd be happy to have potential victims find us and that outweighs the cost of an occasional scammer finding us. Secondly, Surplus is purged of posts older than two weeks old so they are regularly deleted and won't continue to show up after some time. |
