Wow, are you talking about THE "Toshi?" Swoon!

RENTERS BEWARE! Apartment and house vacation rentals are not common in NYC. In fact, most are scams. Even if they are not outright scams, you could end up in an illegal rental and not even know it. Use a hotel instead.

Short term apartment rentals are for the most part illegal in New York. If you would like to read more about the subject please go to the FAQs at the top of the page.

As for Toshi, he is real but is definitely renting illegal apartments. Here is a recent thread about him:

Not only are these illegal rentals. They're in dirty, un-safe buildings. The pictures he shows are only of his building. Most of his rentals are in other buildings. It's a scam, it's an illegal business and it's a great way to get to know Brooklyn's rats, bedbugs, and drug dealers. Stick with an actual hotel.

The apartments he rents actually do exist, however, according to many more TA reports, the pictures on his websites are not of the actual apartment.

Wouldn't the fact that he's using his website/s to purpertrate illegal activities i.e. renting illegal apartments be enough for a TOS/AUP report?

Just an aside. I read on another blog (can't locate it right now) that he's hunting down all his internet enemies. He'd really be pissed if his website got shut down Evil or Very Mad

The website may well be used for an illegal activity but there is no evidence of a scam (which is what we deal with here)

I don't think a hoster will suspend the site based purely on an allegation of criminal activity. I think in this case it might take law enforcement to have the site closed.
