I received a phone call from 5-062-280-5935 (yes, that was the phone number) and they tried to bait me into some credit card scam. I make it sound like I might be interested, and wanted to know how I could get back in touch with them. They happily gave me the url: www.accountservices.com
I am on the do-not-call registry (I would register if you have not already on www.donotcall.gov ) and these guys just somehow got my personal information.
I've received about 20 like this in the past week, and reported it to the FCC who have neglected to do anything about it. I baited their URL, what can I do next? |

There appears to be something wrong with the phone number as posted. I don't think there is a country code of 5.
Also the url posted looks like a legitimate site.

When they call just tell them that you are on the do not call list and to take your name off their list. Tell them you will report them if they call again. This usually stops the calls.
Keep track of the calls - dates, times, numbers, etc. I think they have 6 months to remove your name from the list. If they continue to call after 6 months than the FCC will do something about it.
You said the calls started about a month ago, did you fill out any online forms or order anything online about that time? They might have gotten your number from that. You should probably keep a close eye on your bank and credit card statements for a while to make sure nobody has accessed your private information. |

These people are slippery. The number that showed up on your caller ID is a "spoofed" number. There is no 062 area code or country code 5. It makes it hard for authorities to track them. Reporting them to the FCC or invoking the Do Not Call List is futile.
The good news is that some enterprising baiters are starting to fight back. See http://blogs.courant.com/george_gombossy/2009/03/new-phone-scam-to-lower-credit.html -- go about halfway down the page in the comments. |
