Baits are rarely lost because an email address gets shut down.
If that does happen it will probably be with a low-level half-brained scammer who wasn't worth baiting anyway.

Any half-decent scammer will have a back-up email to respond to you from and explain why his previous email address is no longer available.
The excuses for having changed email address make some of the funnier responses you will receive.

We don't know it's them, it's just a theory. It could be the email provider acting on reports from other recipients of the same emails, or someone else closing accounts. We could move the Surplus forum to behind a log-in, but that would not stop someone signing up to harvest the addresses. It would, however, reduce the chances that someone searching for the email address will find us and learn it's a scam. Smile

It's too bad Sisters of Spam offered little reasoning for their actions in the above mentioned thread.

However after giving it a little thought I see how their approach might benefit the cause if done in a regular manner.
My reasoning goes like this:
Lad collects a list of target addresses and sends his spam. Because one or more of the targets is Sisters of Spam, his reply account gets closed.
Lad then creates a new account and sends the spam again. However, because SoS address(es) is still on his target list the account gets closed again. So - as long as his target list is infected with SoS addresses, it is useless.
That means that the actions of Sisters of Spam make lads drop long lists of potential victims - as long as SoS keep closing the reply accounts on a long term regular manner.

@Juliette - It doesn't really work like that though.

They will spam hundreds if not thousands of addresses seeking victims. They play the numbers game and know that only a very small percentage will respond.
The moment they do respond, those addresses will be harvested and stored in another box such as a bogus barrister or bank official.

So even if the original box is closed, it won't do anything to help those potential victims, because the lads will take just a matter of seconds to open a new box and scam them from there.

Only this time, he is hiding even deeper in cyberspace.

There is no harm in closing the accounts that the scammers are sending their initial emails from. I routinely hit the spam button in my email account. Unless you have a new lad the replies will be going to a different account. They will also typically ask you to reply to a different email address in the body of the email. Those are the accounts you do not want to report.

But my point is different - Sisters of Spam may be able to close reply accounts before they can recruit new vics. I don't know the real numbers but it's not unreasonable to think that SoS can close a yahoo account within 30 mins after receiving the spam (I'm sure yahoo staff is aware of their activities). That gives very little time to the vics to respond. If you have access to examples of some correspondence between real victims and lads, you can check the time stamps. I doubt many of them responded within 30 mins.

If SoS close reply accounts fast and in a regular manner, lads loose most of the potential victims from their list.

Of course, a single person closing one or two lads accounts after they have been up for days or months is counter-productive. But I think the organized approach of SoS might actually do a lot of good.
