A great actor and staunch supporter of civil rights. I'll never forget the first time I saw Ben Hur.

He was an excellent actor. I enjoyed every movie or show of his that I watched. I really liked him in The Ten Commandments.

The Ten Commandments and the first Planet of the Apes are two of my all time favorites.

It's sad that his last years were spent in an Alzheimers fugue.

A truly sad night for me. I admired his work in the NRA more than his acting, but both were very impressive.

Heston was so intimately and publicly involved with the NRA that it is impossible write an obituary without discussing that fact. But just in case that triggers (no pun intended!) a political discussion here, I'd like to remind everyone that such arguments are not condoned. Let's keep focused on Heston and his work, without any judgment calls. Whether or not you agreed with his opinion of the Second Amendment, he was a noteworthy actor.

I am bummed over learning of his passing. I too liked the first planet of the apes and the ten commandments. RIP, man.

I was saddened to learn of his passing.

I just may run out after work tonight to see if I can get a DVD of The Ten Commandments. One of my childhood memories was my dad taking the whole family to see that at a drive-in movie when growing up.

I liked El Cid the best of all his performances. You have to love a story, yes it is based on a true story, that the good guy still kills someone after he is already dead.

Was he actually in that movie. I know that Kurt Douglas was Spatacus, but role did Heston play?

He was great actor! Omega Man the second making of "I Am Legend".

Was so sorry to hear of his passing; saw Planet of the Apes on late night telly only last Friday; dug out my copy of The Omega Man" and watched it yesterday...

I remember reading an article ages ago where Heston talked about the early lean years where he posed as an artists model; he said his wife hand-made the skimpy garments he wore for the classes. Now there's matrimonial dedication for you.

I remember watching a 25th anniversary Saturday Night Live show that had dozens of the big stars who had appeared on the show over the years.
Heston comes out at one point, and talks about people who--because they did not understand what the show was about, or what it was trying to do, would bash it mercilessly.

He then proceeded to read a example--and this letter absolutely trashed the show. By the time he finished reading, there was dead silence, and everyone was wondering who the hell was the asshole who had written such a insulting letter. He folds the letter, looks straight into the camera, and says...."signed....Charlton Heston."

For someone to admit he was wrong in such a powerful and unflinching manner spoke volumes about the character of the man.
There were things that he and I would not have agreed upon, but I always respected the man himself.

Charlton Heston....class act all the way....so let it be written...so let it be done!

I thought he was wonderful, and I don't say that about many people! Apart from the fact that he starred in half a dozen of my fave films, he was married to the same woman for over 40 years - that's the kind of dedication you just don't get nowadays! I knew someone who met him when he was on the stage in London, and she raved about how polite and modest he was, and how instead of just signing an autograph and running, he spent ages talking to anyone who wanted to exchange a few words with him. As others have said, truly, a class act. Some of today's 'superstars' should look and learn.
