After taking "early retirement" some years back, I took a position setting up business operations for a young, newly-founded company; I've seen the company grow and progress, but I was certain I would spend the rest of my time doing routine work, and I wasn't unhappy with that.
Earlier this week I learnt one of the younger men was being promoted to a position of importance; I know him well, he deserved the promotion, and I know he'll be a tremendous asset to the company.
I was completely gob-smacked Friday morning when he called me and asked how I felt about being his second-in-charge  He went on to explain that he met with the owners about his promotion; they said they would hire an assistant for him and he said "I already know who I want"....
I asked him why ME, and he said two things that made me feel very nice:
1. when I visited his job site last week he said that out of everyone there, he could tell I was the only person who really understood the project, and
2. he told me that he could count on my life experiences to help him.
Mind you, I'm only middle-aged, but these days, that's a wonderful thing to hear.
Fingers crossed for Holmie; it's up to the owners to make the final decision

Congrats are in order. 
If they have enough confidence to promote him I'm sure they'll be wise enough to heed his advice for 2nd in charge. Way to go Sherlock! |
