Following a message on my gmail account I checked this website and it all seems to be a scam (10-12.5% monthly interest!!! - Can't be genuine).

This is a ponzi scheme which is illegal, at least in the US. There is a basic description at http://www.sec.gov/answers/ponzi.htm.
