Hey, believe it or not, but a scammer really had me fooled this time. After succesfully ignoring all the 'You won millions!' and 'I have good deal for you!' emails for years, I fell for it like a sucker...

What's the case? I have my car on sale (anybody interested? It's a Ford Escort RS2000 for 2200 Euro's Very Happy ) on the Internet. I got a reaction trough Autoscout24.de. I was surprised to see that autoscout24 advertised my car Europe-wide, but even more by receiving a reaction from Africa!

The guy introduced himself as 'George Bill', originally from the UK, now stationed in Africa. Turned out to be Nigeria later...

Anyway, he was interested in buying my car to import it into Nigeria and was willing to pay a good price. Very good. Smile

The entire story is below in all the emails... read it trough if you like.

Luckily, I may be a bit naive but I'm not stupid. So I never trusted him from the beginning, but figured it was a money laundry and/or drugs transport. Not untill someone pointed me to this site I got his real goal. Which he never would have reached anyway, because I wasn't going to send him a single cent as long as I didn't receive full payment from him (through a 'client from Europe' from George, see below).

At this point, nothing bad happened to me so far, I didn't go for his suggestions to send money to his shipping company and from now on, I'm in control! Twisted Evil

Actually, I'm going to get HIM to send (real) money to ME! Laughing

Read on and enjoy...

His initial inquiry:
Someone has inquired about your car listing on AutoScout24

An AutoScout24 User is interested in your car listing and has sent you this e-mail.

In particular, the user has expressed an interest in your following car:

FORD Escort RS2000i, 2/3-Doors, 10/1992
Black, 177000 km, EUR 2200,-

Please contact this person:

Name: bill
E-Mail: [email protected]
Telephone: nil

Following are specific questions this person has asked about your car:
Goodday,
I`m an auto agent in United Kindom but presently based in Africa.I buy/sell used cars, bikes and engine parts,e.t.c. I saw your advertisement placed on www.autoscout24.de. I`m highly interested in
buying your FORD.Let me know your least offering price and i would
like to know present condition of it?
In respect of my shipping,i have a reputable International Shipping Company that take care of my shipping down to destination.
Kindly get back to me via my email account if my enquiry acceptable.
Thanks and God bless,
George.........
Email:[email protected]

And my first reply:
Dear sir,

Thanks for your inquiry after my ad. As you can imagine, I was kinda' surprised to receive a sign of interest from Africa! I couldn't reply to your mail sooner, 'cause I had to work, but I did find some time to find out how I would have to export my car, when we come to a deal.

It turnes out that won't be any of a problem. If you want to buy my car, I will take care of the necessary paperwork and related costs on this side, and of course delivery to point of shipment.

In case you've been looking at more RS2000 models,
EDIT
Lot's of sale talk, technical state of car etc.
EDIT

Seen the distance between us, trust is of even greater importance in this sale than it is normally. From my side, I have been totally fair with you on matter of the condition of the car. Things I mentioned was 'work to do' for me, but I can't finish it because my current working position requires a more 'representative' car.

EDIT
More sales talk... Smile
EDIT

Because I know nothing about you whatsoever, I feel necesarry to ask for payment in front. I hope that doesn't surprise or bother you...

Please let me know what you think of this offer, whether it matches with what you had in mind.

For your pleasure, I've taken all the hi-resolution pictures I have of my car. For you to take a closer look. Please download them here:

EDIT
Anyone interested in these pics, just let me know! Wink
EDIT

I'm looking forward to your reply!

With kind regards,
Robin

OK, so George gets exited, he got game! Cool
Hello Robin,
Thanks for the mail,am o.k with your price. In respect of payment i have a client in the Europe who is owing me and he has agreed to issue a cheque of 7,500 Euro .All i need to do to make payment easier and faster is to instruct him to procure a certified cheque and mail it to you on the address and name you want on the check. But i would want to know if i can count on you to send my balance to my shipping company via Western Union Money Transfer as soon as you receive the cheque,so that they can start to process the INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING DOCUMENTS of the CAR and come for the pick up at your location.Mail me asap to enable me arrange payment.
Furnish me with your name, physical mailing address and contact/cell phone number, so I can forward it to my client in Europe who will issue the cheque(Bank Draft) for the payment.
Thanks and God bless,
Regards,
George.....

Oh, how nice. He'd like God to bless me! Well, such a nice person can't have any bad intentions, right?? Rolling Eyes

Hello George,

I'm glad you're willing to come to a deal! Now let's make sure everything turnes out OK.
Since I never used either cheques or Western Union for any payment, I did some research to prepare myself, to ensure everything goes as planned.

If I understood everything correctly, this is what we'll do:

1. I give you my exact name, address and phone number (see bottom of this mail)
2. your client sends me the cheque, worth 7500 Euro
3. I take the cheque to my bank to verify and cash it
4. I keep 2000 Euro for payment of my car
5. the remaining money goes to a Western Union agent
6. you provide me with the exact name of the recipient
7. I pay the Western Union agent about 150 Euro for sending the money
8. which leaves about 5350 or 5250 Euro to send to your shipping company
9. I send you or the recipient of the money the 10-digit code from the money transfer
10. I take care of necessary paperwork to unregister the licence plates here in Holland
11. your shipping company comes to me to pick up the car
12. it gets shipped to you

Is this right? Please confirm or correct me if I'm wrong!

For now, I'll start with giving you my personal information:
EDIT
OK, here WAS my personal info. Wink
EDIT

I'd like to express my good faith in this whole procedure oops Embarassed that it will all work out, as long as we prepare ourselves well by making clear agreements.

With kind regards,
Robin

Of course, George is more than eager to share my good faith! And he's very impressed with my thorough work! He's in the perfect position, where his victim is actually pro-actively working on his own scam! Briliant! Mad

Hello Robin,
Thanks a lot for the mail and the info provided...It`s highly appreciated.Yes,you really understood my payment method(payment & shipping of the Car).....you must be an intellingent person and somebody to count on on this deal.I will forward it to my client in the Europe as soon as possible so that he can go ahead with the payment as agreed upon and i owuld like you to notify me as soon as you receive it ok so that i can forward you my Shipper`s Informations where the rest of the funds will be wired so that they can start to process the Internationala Shipping documents and some inportant paper works ok........And you are to get back to me as soon as the money has been sent through with the MTCN(10 Digits),Amount Sent,Sender`s Name & Address e.t.c so that they can be able to receive the money overthere and proceed ASAP.
Thanks and God bless,
My regards to you and your family,
George Bill..

Yes, I'm such an intelligent person, sometimes I don't even get what I am doing! Confused Let's mail George again... I got some doubts about this payment method, so I'm making a hopeless try to change the arangement.

Hi George,

So the cheque is on its way to me right now? If so, can you give me any estimate of when it'll arrive here?

In case the cheque isn't already been sent by your client, would it be possible to split the cheque? To be honest, I'm a little bothered with... is your client fully trustworthy? I mean, the risks are with you right now and I know I will do my part of the standing arrangement but what if the cheque isn't covered? Then I have a situation... Can you take these worries away for me? Actually, I would be far more comfortable if the cheque would be just the amount needed to pay my car. Your client could send a second cheque with the rest amount directly to you or your shipping company! Can't you arrange that?

Could you please provide me with the address and recipient name of your shipping company? And the exact location where to deliver the car for shipment. Also: about when would the car be shipped?
I need all this information to make a planning for myself, because obviously this will take me some time.

I wish you all the best!

With kind regards,
Robin

Surprise, suprise, the arangement couldn't be changed anymore. The cheque is on my way! Oh joy...

Well, George, some of us actually have to work for a living, so I wasn't at home at delivery time of the cheque. But rest assured, I will handle things as quick as possible! But allas, my bank is making trouble, damn! Surprised

Hello George!

Since I'm at work today I knew I wouldn't receive the cheque at the first delivery attempt. I contacted FedEx and they would make a new appointment with me, so I'll have the cheque tomorrow. After that I called my bank to ask for procedures. I was in the understanding that I could cash the cheque immediately, but that turned out to be a mistake! They told me it can take up to three or even four weeks to clear the cheque and make the money available to me!! Pretty slow working if you ask me... bit of a dissapointment actually, this really slows things down. But we'll see as I deliver the cheque at my bank desk tomorrow, processing speed seems to depend on the currency on the cheque (Euro's, right?) and where it was sent from.

Well, as soon as my bank transfers me the money I will go directly to the nearest Western Union agent, to send 5.500,- minus transfer costs to your shipping company. You already provided me with a name and address in you last mail:
Mr.ERIC THOMAS
50 SHIPPING AVENUE,
APAPA,
LAGOS,
NIGERIA

I assume that is the correct recipient of the money??

With best wishes,
Robin

Oh dear, George now has stress!! Three to four weeks!?!? That's not what he had in mind! They should pay the cheque immediately and check for coverage later! So he's moving to Plan B... HELP GEORGE with paying his shipping company! Uh, wait a moment, that's not my responsibility, right? Rolling Eyes Smile

1.Money Transfer Control Number(MTCN)
2.Sender`s Name & Address
3.Amount Sent in U.S DOLLARS
4.Text Question & Answer

My regards to you and your family,
George Bill....

Well, George's English isn't getting any better... And sending him 2000 Euro??? Don't think so. Negotiating with my bank? Hey fuck you, this isn't Nigeria, here we have rules and procedures that are not subject to negotiation you dumb shit! Twisted Evil But anyway, George is following his cheque closely and notices when I picked it up at the FedEx station. So before I have any chance to reply, he sends me two mails. Here`s the Tracking Details:

the tracking details... first specified station: FedEx Sort Facility at Paris.

I will be waiting to hearing from you soon,
Thanks for your usual cooperation,
Best Regards,
George Bill

At this point, George is beginning to annoy me... even though I still didn't get his real scam, he's nagging. But on the other hand, I'm also eager to close the deal asap, so I went directly with the cheque to my bank... But they're not willing to rush things, looking back I should be really glad about that!! Oh and by the way, George, even if I had the money, I wouldn't send it your way! Go stick your agreement with the shipper where the sun don't shine...

Hi George,

I was about to give you a call on your cellphone, untill I noticed that would cost me an astonishing 1 Euro per minute. So I'll inform you by email on what's happening...

First of all: cancel that upcoming shipment!!
A Bank Draft can't be cleared on short notice, despite what you said. Apparently, it's not certified or something. After I went to pick up the cheque at FedEx tomorrow, I went to my bank to cash it. I urged them to proces the cheque as quickly as possible, but they refuse to by-pass the intense safety check... I'm now very displeased with my bank, because the clerk told me it could take weeks, even more than a month before the money is transfered to my bankaccount!!! I find this very annoying, because I was under the impression that this could be handled within this week. Unfortunately I can't go to an other bank, to try if they are not this slow. Terribly dissapointing. But for you as well, I presume...? I guess you haven't done business involving Dutch banking before, since you had higher expectations as well? Next time, I would use international bank transfer (electronically), instead of cheques. Much faster!

Anyway, I can't and I won't send any money in front to the shipping company. First of all, I just don't have such amount. And besides, principally I'm not willing to take any financial risk in this matter. I will do my very best to handle our agreement fast and accurate, but I'm not going to send either money or the car before the amount on the cheque is really onto my backaccount. Oh, by the way, the clerk told me a lot of the processing time depends on the bank that issued the cheque, so if the bank in Ireland handles things fast, it might just be a short wait, but no-one can tell...

Thanks for all the information regarding the Western Union Money Transfer, I understood all of it. I already located the main agent in my area and I will use them to handle things quick and correct.

Hoping for a quick clearance of the cheque... please let me know if I can be of any assistance in the meantime!

With kind regards,
Robin

Hm, George now probably thinks of his money as a snow man is his own fucking front yard in Nigeria! But he makes a final attempt, crying for help...

Hello Robin,
Thanks a lot for the mail and the update, could you please let me know the exact date that the cheque would takes to clear your account....Concerning the Transfer of funds via Western Union,i would be very greatful if ou can send at least 1,500 Euro to the shipping agent so that they use it to register for the shipment because i have delayed them so much and i don`t want to loose my chances with them.....The arrangement for the picking up of the car will be done as soon as the cheque clears the bank ok.
I await your urgent response that will warrant the progress of this transaction..
Thanks and God bless,
George Bill.....

George, my dear friend, I don't like to repeat myself, but for you I will make an exeption: I'll say NO once more...

Hi George,

To my regret, I can't give you an exact date for the cheque to clear, because my bank couldn't tell me either. We'll just have to wait untill my bank gets the message from the issueing bank that the cheque is covered for...

I'm very sorry about your relation with your shipping agent, but I'm not capable, nor willing to send money before I received any actual payment. The first problem is just a fact and unsolvable on short term, it just can't be done. But I'm being very honest with you, by saying that I wouldn't do it even when I had the money. My apologies if this displeases you, but I'm not about to take any financial risk of this size. Of course the fact we don't actually know each other plays a role, but I wouldn't even arrange such a thing with most of my friends.

I hope this trouble doesn't damage your business, and that you're still eager to finish our deal. I wish I could do more to speed up the processing of the cheque, but it's simply out of my power. Sorry again.

With kind regards,
Robin

OK, at this point suddenly George falls quiet... oh dear, I hope he's not too mad at me?? Wink And that same day I find out about this site... aaaahhh, interesting! Especially this topic:
http://www.419eater.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1133&highlight=car+automobile+sale
Wow, look at that! That's my story, in a diferent place at a diferent time, but still... George, you'd better get ready, 'cause now I'm ahead of you!! Twisted Evil I decide to re-open the conversation with some good news... we can get our money immediately, but we need a downpayment of 500 Euro, can't George please send me that money ASAP, since I'm broke?? Cool

Hey George!

I have good news and I have bad news...

Today I have called my bank again, to see if I could manage something with bank employees at a higher level than the clerk from yesterday. And I succeeded! They are willing to transfer me the money immediately. But the bad news: there's an extra condition. The initial delay is due to rigid safety checks. Of course, despite of that check, sometimes it goes wrong. So they have an insurance to cover their own risk. This is where I could pressure them to help us out. IF, the issuer of the money is willing to pay 500 Euro in immediately availabeble bonds (i.e. cash), we actually cover for their insurance and then the bank will pay me the total amount of 7500 Euro directly.

I need your help here!! I'm very low on cash right now, because I have a holiday to pay. Could you please send me 500 trough Western Union or so, ASAP. So I will be able to seal this deal in the shortets time possible. Actually I'm very excited about this new opportunity to stick to our agreements and your deal with the shipping company!!!

Hoping to hear soon from you!!

With best regards,
Robin

What was I thinking?? Of course George can't send me money, dumb shit that I am! Smile But he won't say that, but just ignores the fact that I asked HIM for money and aswered as if his client should send that 500. Too bad, his client just happens to be on a business trip to China!

Hello Robin,
Thanks a lot for the mail,
However,my client that send the cheque,he`s present out of town on business trip to China. What i suggested that you should right away is to tell your bank that they should deduct the 500 Euro from the money (7,500Euro) so that they will paid the money immediately to your bank account or i would advise that you borrow the money(500Euro) colleagues and soon as the funds is available you can deduct that from my balance ok.....As soon as the cash has been paid to you i would like you to go directly to the western union outlets in your location that i forwardedd to you in my previous email and get the money wired as instructed.......
The Name and Address to wire the balance to is:

Name: Mr. ERIC THOMAS
Adderss: 50 SHIPPING AVENUE
APAPA SEAPORT,
LAGOS
NIGERIA
23401
The bearer is the Shipper who will handle the shipping
payment and i will like you to hasten it up so that this transaction can be completed as soon as possible today.
As soon as the money has been wired in U.S DOLLARS to the Shipping Agent,i would like you to get back to me immediately with the Western Union Transfer Details and don`t hesitate to deduct the western union charges from my balance also ok in order to speed up this transaction as possible in order to avoid shipping delay ok.
The Western Union information needed are as soon as it has been wired:

EDIT
All the information copy-paste from his previous mail, with again the list of Western Union agents in my neighborhood.
EDIT

I will be looking forward to hearing from you soon,Please call me on this mobile # +234-1-4728884 if you have any questions..i have been trying to reach on the phone but i couldn`t get through.
Thanks and God bless,
Best Regards,
George Bill....

Yes, God bless this counter-scam, haleluya! Very Happy Of course I didn't expect it to go that smooth... I'm currently thinking about my next answer... anybody suggestions?? I wish George good luck with getting trough on my cell phone... I don't think he'll find the right person on the other side. Razz Wink

Too bad your client is in China George! I guess now YOU are the one that needs to come up with the money... Twisted Evil no one else will! Don't you want to invest 500 to receive 5500 George?? hehehe Very Happy Let's see how greedy this guy actually is...

Good morning George,

I'm sorry for my delayed reply, unfortunately the Internet connection at home broke down. Now I'm back at work I have an opportunity to answer your last mail...

Deducting the 500 from the cheque-sum is obviously impossible George... the bank can't possibly mix the amount to be cleared with the sum needed to express-cash it. It's just administratively not done, you just can't deduct the insurance money from the sum it intends to cover for. And there's no way I'm gonna ask any collegues, I'm not about to involve them in a deal between us. I don't have that strong a bond with my collegues. None of my friends can come up with this kind of money, I'm a student you know. My family doesn't really approve our deal, they don't trust doing business without ever meeting the other party... so they'll be the last to help out.

So, concluding... YOU are the only one that can help me out here George! You need to help out to make our deal happen! Please, I'm still eager to help you keep your good name with your shipping company and clear this deal asap. I've checked out with Western Union and unfortunately it seems not possible to send money from your location to me, but maybe you know of an other option?? Maybe you have more business parters in Europe? Even in the Netherlands perhaps?? Or just wrap cash dollars in thick paper and send it trough FedEx...

I'm doing my best to make our deal work and it's costing me quite some time now, so I would really appreciate if you can cooperate with me... Within one week after I receive the 500 Euro, your shipper will receive the full 5500! Yes, this is a bit of a gesture from my side. Because of the delay that is caused on my side (even though because of my bank), I am willing to take costs on my account. Those aren't too much and I'm eager to sell my car.

Hoping to hear soon from you!

With best regards,
Robin

Welcome aboard! It's always nice to see a fellow Dutch man. Good thing you kept your senses and didn't fall for it.

A word of advise: Getting the scammer to send you money is a nice trick, but don't keep the money to yourself.

A) That could land you in legal trouble if you are unlicky (since you're scamming him back).
B) We know quite a few good causes and financially destroyed scam victims that could use it.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, Tweety!

But actually I would be very surprised if I do get him to send me money... he'll most probably never do that. But it'll be fun to watch him struggle with excuses NOT to send me money. Very Happy

Although, if he does send me money, I'll definetly remember your words... after I recovered laughing my ass off! Wink

Good luck in your baiting man. If you do get him to send you the money kudos but as Tweety says be careful about getting in trouble. You could send him pictures of course of you burning the money Very Happy then again he can always go to the website and complain to them that you are using their service to scam. Id suggest just deep sixing him if he does want to send money, but why would he ever do that Razz

I know y'all are talking like scambaiters - but be warned that any money he does send you could belong to any number o scams:

-> Fake check scam (overpayment)
-> Wire transfer from third party (overpayment)

Fake Check Scam:

They send you or your bank a fake check which is deposited into your account. The money often is there for you to use, and until the check is found to be fraudulent you can do with the money what you want. They usually overpay you (by around double) and then lend on your good nature to send back the difference (through WU of course). When the check is found to be fraudulant you will be required to pay back the bank the money for the check, even though you dont have it any more.

Wire Transfer from third party

This is a similar scam to the one above, but involves the scammer scamming two people at once. The scammer usually gets someone else they are scmaming to send you an amount of money (overpayment) through direct deposit / wire transfer / some other traceable and legal means. Again they are hoping you will WU them the difference - then they leave both victims to fight over who is liable.
