So, long story shortened, I got phoned by some woman a while ago, C3 or 4 months ago claiming to be from the wall Street Journal and they were doing a short survey on investments in South Africa( where I'm from) couple random questions then down to business, how much do I have invested and in what exactly... Told her to sod off and hang up, mentioned it to my wife but shrugged it off...
About two weeks ago some guy phones me up with a British/Scottish accent claiming to be connected, Wall street Journal, special inside info on a cure for peanut allergies or Virgin Galactic and I can buy in before it goes live on the NY stock exchange...
It kinda vaguely sounded legit until he sent me a email that went straight to spam with "attachments".
Oh, before I forget he claimed to be from a company in Hong Kong, with a completely set up webpage and all, even checked it out on Google maps...
Smelling old fish I decide to trace his IP address, turns out it first pinged off somewhere in Kansas.
His phone calls seamed to originate from SA so I assume it's VoIP?
I'm really new to this so I'd appreciate some ideas and a fantastic F about.
He asked me to send a return email from the one he sent, so he knows I got it, me getting around to view it this weekend.
It having attachments I decided that was a no...
If I opened it in a VM would I be safe? I only viewed it in the spam folder.

Drop this idiot completely. He has your real email address and phone number. Read the stickies and forum rules on here to bait safely. Best to stop all interaction with this one. You can report this one at scamwarners.com and then create new baiting emails not tied to your real life info and then pick up a new lad at scamwarners.com that doesn't know anything about you. As mentioned, this is not baiting safely, so block the number and do not engage. Why? Would you knowingly give your phone number to a thief or other criminal?
This also sounds more like a Boiler Room scheme than Advance Fee Fraud.

Even if you didn't give them your details. They have them.
Just stop any contact, block them if you can.
If you want to start scambaiting there are loads of other scammers you can play with.
