Hi,
I just red about you from a finnish newspaper. This all started on previous spring. My relative falled to one love scam via facebook. It all started when one facebook alias 'Robert Hammer Wayne' added her on facebook and they started talking. After a while it turned into a typical "nigerian letter". He told that there is some money suitcase which some diplomat will deliver to her home.
Yes I know how ridiculous that sounds, but well she ate the bait. She made bank transactions worth of ~8k€ to the scammer. My relative has now made a crime report to finnish police, however I dont think that will be high on their priority list.
Do you think it would be possible to catch the scammer? I do not know every details about this at the moment, but if some of you is willing to help, I am more than happy about it and I will ask relevant questions from my relative. |

Welcome to eater! Unfortunately, the chance of the police catching a scammer in another Country is very low. The best thing anyone can do is learn their lesson and move on. By the way, 419eater's sister site scamwarners.com is an very good resource for doing just that. If you or your friend decide to try baiting, this site is the best one I have found to do that.

Welcome to Eater. I am sorry to hear about your relative. Is it possible to catch the scammer? Unfortunately, it is probably not likely. But, the Finnish police have a greater chance than we do here (our chances are zero as we have no legal authority anywhere).
Despite what was said above, please do not encourage your relative to bait. Instead, help them heal first. This is what they need. A resource for victims, such as our sister site ScamWarners is geared to help them. |

Bware is correct: if the scammer is in another country and from what you posted, this seems to be the case, the Finnish Police would have no authority to prosecute. But it is a good thing to give the info for other victims that might fall for the scam.
We advise people who are victims of Romance Scams to stop all communication with the scammer-it only hurts them more. Our sister site ScamWarners (link at the top of the page) can help. Why don't you have your relative visit? |
