My second bait is getting published before my first, which is still ongoing. I decided to get a little more outrageous on my second bait, but I'm afraid I got a little too crazy and either my mugu (1) won't do business without a phone number, (2) disbelieved me, or (3) believed me, but didn't want to deal with someone who has the sorts of experience I alluded to. He's just disappeared without a trace. I've thought about trying to email him again to see if I can draw him out, but I feel it's not worth it.

The cast of characters:

Dr. Henry Ahmed, scammer somehow involved in the oil industry
B. Yuri Cratt, international money transfer specialist

The opening line:

I am Henry Ahmed, Deputy Managing Director of Liquefied Natural Gas
Limited (NLNG). I am writing you this letter with the hope that we can work together on a mutually beneficial business that will bring gains to you and I if we can arrive at a compromise to work together in harmony.

This profitable venture involves the some amount of money which is
presently in an account of the LNG. We need your help as a foreigner to help transfer this money. We cannot make this transfer on our own or in our names for the fact that we are civil servants (still in active service).

But you as a foreigner can assist us in the sense that the money to be transferred will be paid to you as money meant for investment purpose. The money in question is ready for transfer into an account which we expect you to provide.

We have agreed that the money will be shared according to the ratio
that will be agreed on before commencement of business. We will require from you:

a) Full names and mailing address of Company/ Beneficiary.
b) Contact telephone and fax numbers.
The above requirements is to initiate and faclitate the transfer of the money.

Be informed that the reason we are sending you this letter is because we know that the only way to succeed is to seek the help of a foreigner. Your professional status is not a matter of hindrance in this transaction. Please, your assistance is highly solicited. We have no doubts at all that this money will be released and transferred if we get the necessary foreign partner to assist us in this deal.

All expenses regarding the opening of an account if not already in
existence shall be borne by you, all expenses are however reimbursable on the conclusion of this business transaction. It is of high hope that you will consider this request and respond positively. If you are still in doubt after the receipt of this letter please do not hesitate to contact and ask any question(s)that may hinder your decision on this matter.

Please an acknowledgement of the receipt of this letter will be
appreciated. It is after the successful transfer of the funds that we can begin to look into investment possibilities with you as a partner in a joint venture.

While awaiting your early response, thank you in anticipation of your
most valued assistance If you think it is worth giving some thought do
let me know so that I can send you details.

Not listening in on the calls themselves, but they're probably keeping tabs on who I call, particularly overseas. Email has the definite advantage of being less tracable - plus, I see you've already taken the precaution of using a US-based email service. Good move; that should prevent things from raising any red flags with the authorities.

I know you want to keep this transaction 100% risk free. I would rather not take unnecessary risks given past events. Consequently, it is standard procedure for us to use email accounts only for conducting business of this nature. Carrying out this transfer by the book will minimize our exposure to risks, and you do seem rather concerned with confidentiality here. Since you mentioned future investments, I wish to involve elements from one of our prexisting plans and set up an LLP company specifically for this transfer. I'll explain what is involved in that later, but right now I'd like to hear more about what is involved with this transaction.

My mugu just fell silent after that one. I wonder... did he decide to only work with people who give out phone numbers? Was he scared that Yuri seems to have too good an idea of how such business is done? Or was it the line about John Ashcroft reading Yuri's phone bill that scared him?

Your reason for not giving a phone number implied that your incoming and outgoing calls could be monitored. If so, why not your emails also? Mentioning mention of Al-Q, PatroitAct, etc has probably frightened him off. And the landmine story was rather implausible, IMHO.

If (like me) you don't want to use a phone, there are MANY plausible ways around this (use SEARCH and read the Stickies). Among the strategies I have used successfully...

1) I'm deaf
2) I have taken a vow of silence
3) I'm a foreigner and my spoken English is lousy
4) My phone contract does not allow me to make/receive international calls (I tell them I have applied to change this, and it will happen in 2-3 months time) - this was someone else's excellent idea, not mine
5) I'm an airline pilot working in many time zones - I'm not having you call me when I'm on a sleep shift
6) I'm on my fiancee's yacht, with data-only internet access
7) I'm on an expedition in a remote part of the world, with data-only internet access

I'm in prison - no phone calls allowed

But it's generally easier to give them a phone number that won't work or won't help them:
1) Klu Klux Klan, British National Party or other odious group
2) A YACC (or similar) voicemail account
3) Any number that you know is not going to be answered by a human (eg, a fax machine - tell him your fax and phone share a line, and blame the technology)

One golden rule - NEVER give out police or government numbers. We discourage ploys that involve wasting police time.

I'm not experienced, but would being mute or having a speech impediment, a freaky religious belief that thinks phones steal your soul via your voice, or just not wanting people to overhear you talking about this INCREDIBLE RISK-FREE DEAL work too? The last just occured to me but it seems like it ought to be the obvious best one, as it enhances your apparent gullibility and greed even as it gives you an excuse that the scammer can't question without undermining his own con. Actually, now that I think about it I'm pretty sure I've heard that one used. That, and the thing about being a sweet, innocent, trusting old lady who can't hear very well any more.

Oh no, you should use the old lady/old man routine when you ARE taking calls on your phone. He is paying the phone bill, so you just keep the conversation going by saying "Eh?", "Hello?" and "Please speak up, I'm a little deaf you know". And every 5 minutes you should ask him "Who did you say you are?" It's like autobaiting, but with more limited responses.

Yes, I'm quite aware that the land mine story was a little over the top - and Yuri was probably exaggerating a bit about what the group was doing. It was meant to be a little twisted humor there. My first bait is a bit more plausable, other than my main character happening to also be the hero of a science fiction movie who has been slipping references to the movie storyline into his own background. (He also offered a much more normal excuse for not giving out his phone number.) This time I guess I got a little too overconfident and tried to see if I could get the Lads to believe a somewhat more outlandish story line. Yuri was going to have some rather interesting security measures, but it looks like he may have to cut them back next time he does a bait.
